I know the fridge is not a '51

My '51 has no shelves in the door.  Anyone know when Crosley's door shelf patent ran out?

 

That's a very energy efficient refrigerator.  Mine uses less than 350 KWH a year and does not need defrosting often.

Saving? Saving?

Don't think the question is that these units will require "saving", but to whom they shall go and at what price.

Very wise of the seller IMHO to start with a resonable floor bid and then let things go as they may. There have been several pink W&D offerings on fleaPay in the past with really out of line "BIN" prices as the only way of closing the deal, and the units sat without takers.

OTHO there have been other pink washer and dryer sets listed without BIN and they did quite well. Mind you there were some hard feelings, and I'm not naming any names, but none the less units sold.

yes we do the patent ran for 17 years and was up in 1950 that is why Westinghouse started putting shelves in their doors in 1951 and Ge and the rest followed soon after PATRICK COFFEY

AGREED! This is a shame! I was really looking forward to watching this one actually go all the way through the bidding process. My remaining thoughts about this are in the Dirty Laundry forum.

I will continue to keep these kind of auctions to myself as well.

The purpose of auctions is to give everyone a fair shot, very selfish and underhanded, IMO. It sucks that it was my bid that got dismissed. Would have been entertaining and exciting to watch the last hour of that auction. Win or loose.

eBay Has Long Aligned Itself To Sellers Over Buyers

In order to keep them from going to the competition. It is virtually impossible for a buyer to retract a bid these days, but sellers can cancel auctions anytime for any reason.

Years ago, IIRC an auction could not be cancelled if bidding had started, but that has gone by the wayside. It is clearly obvious eBay wants nothing but the seller/insertion fees which is where they make their money. Buyers contribute nothing directly to their bottom line, well unless they stop buying on eBay.

Hopefully people will start getting fed up and complain and or avoid fleaBay until they stop this sort of nonesense.

It's too bad the auction didn't run it's course, but no surprising. Many large items or rare items get negotiated behind the scenes. Regardless of the ethics involved in ending an auction listing, it would be hard not to turn down a pile of cash being offered for these. Think about it, they don't pay ebay their fees or paypal their cut and they get all this storage space back!

Ebay is not all for the seller. Ebay hates to lose their percentage of the final value, something like 10%. Ebay also has mandated that sellers accept paypal on nearly everything. Paypal is very buyer friendly is listening to damage, incorrectly described item, etc complaints from buyers. If Paypal sides with the buyer, the funds are yanked out of your account. By the way, Ebay owns them.

What One Imagines Is Not Just One But

Several persons were waving offers under the seller's nose.

This post got about 800 views before the auction was pulled. That kind of action just doesn't happen without bringing some sort of results.

I agree with what has been said about the eBay experience from both buyer and seller perspectives.  I don't use eBay a lot and have never sold anything there, but I can understand the incentive for a seller to deal directly with a buyer if the merchandise commands a high price since eBay would want their cut.  Sellers may also prefer not to go through PayPal if an alternative form of payment is possible.

 

There are no posts above that indicate anyone considered these a "must have" item and that they'd be bidding.  Just one advisory that someone was going to contact the seller.  I think if anyone expressed a high level of interest, most people here would let them pursue it and wish them good luck.  We're a sort of family here, and would generally be pleased to know that a member was able to secure them.  I think the team effort that was being considered demonstrates the focus on the greater cause -- to get these items into appreciative hands among the membership.

 

Marty, I'm sorry you didn't even get a chance.  That would have been a fabulous gift!  Maybe I'm dreaming, but if you had announced here that you were going after them, others may have stepped aside.   That's assuming someone here was the person who struck the deal.  That is the practice among the membership of the rotary telephone forum I belong to.
