Thought I would start a thread on home remedys for when one isn't feeling the best, but not quiet an ER case. Do you all have any remedies that have been passed down in your families that you swear by?

Have come down with a stomach bug today and currently laid up. I can't even find the Peto Bismol!!! Guess I might have picked it up last night at a restaurant, as Dad & I ate out. The stuff can be so contagious, scared I'm going to pass it to my elderly Dad.

As Laundress would say: "Discuss among yourselves."

Gatorade

I had something like this about a month ago. Only lasted 2 days but was miserable. I had some Gatorade here and drank that. Also BRAT diet can help. Banana Rice Applesauce and Toast. Just real mild foods. This can be a virus and is contagious. I added back my real diet of basic foods gradually. Pedialyte is probably better but more expensive. Hope this helps.

Barry,

sorry to here you’re not feeling well, and don’t have any Pepto Bismol. Try some ginger tea, if you happen to have some ginger root on hand, steep a few slices in a cup of hot water and add sugar or honey to taste. No fresh ginger, put a 1/2 tsp.of dry ginger in a cup of hot water, and sweeten as desired. Ginger helps to settle the stomach. You could also just drink ginger ale. As advised above by Martin, eat bland foods. Cream of Wheat or dry toast are easy on the upset stomach. Stay away from fruits and vegetables, except bananas, until the malady has passed. Also, avoid dairy products too until you’re better.

If you are going to go to the store anyway, just cut to the chase and get some Imodium, that will stop the trots ASAP. Also, if you happen to have some Tylenol Codeine tablets around, take one right away. Codeine will plug you up right away, just like you ate cement. All opiates are constipating. Thats the very reason I don’t like to take them, but in your situation they just may be what the doctor ordered, so to speak.

Hope this will help, and that you feel better soon.

sorry to hear you under the weather....

depends on what actually is causing your issues.....something you ate, or an actual virus...

either case, you got to get it out of you, so it sort of has to run a bit of the course first....

don't want to be graphic, but when I get a crohn's attack, it gushes out of both ends non stop...you can dehydrate super fast, for me, no other choice but the ER...

ginger tea, or flat ginger ale and saltine crackers.....if you can tolerate this, and it stays down, then you go on to Pepto, and finally Imodium...

Acetaminophen for pain, as Ibuprofen will upset your stomach...

very true on the BRAT diet.....also, cream of chicken soup, toast, yogurt-especially with a probiotic, clear juices...

if you can tolerate this for a day, then you can start moving on to regular foods in moderation...…

hope your feeling better soon....

Thank-you guys for the input. I'm not sure what is the cause. Headache, sweating, weak, and couldn't stay out of the bathroom yesterday. Though I'm doing better today, I'm tired and still have a dull headache. I was feeling fine until yesterday morning, the only place I've been out to was a restaurant night before last, but like I said earlier if its a virus it can be so contagious. Campbells Chicken Noodle Soup was all I could handle, sodium. Thought about getting the garden hose out!!!!

I didn't know about the ginger, I'm going to remember that. I did have some Tylenol on hand.

Thank you again for the well wishes and thoughts.

Feel better soon. I had something awful back in February. Still not sure whether it was a virus or food poisoning. I had eaten lunch at a "Smashburger" in Milford CT. on a Saturday afternoon and by 8pm that night, was keeping nothing down. And since I am the person who says "I never get stomach things", this was a horror. The upper end went on all night until 8am the next morning then the other side started. Long story short, I missed 4 days of work since i couldn't even think of getting on a train for a long ride to NYC. For one week, my diet was ginger ale, Gatorade, plain toast, a few pretzels, clear broth, an occasional glass of Mexican Coke (with sugar) and cherry Jell-o. In the meantime I lost 12 pounds in one week. And it took another week after that to feel normal again. Also regardless of what it was, I still haven't been able to look at the business end of a hamburger since.

not sure whether it was a virus or food poisoning

Sounds like a food borne illness, (and your Smashburger episode as well).

These are not coincidences.

Remember all the hundreds of people that were sickened at Chipotle?

I’ve seldom gotten so ill with diarrhea that lasted more than a day or two. But in 2001, on a trip to Santa Monica I got the worse case of it that I ever had, and it lasted for a week. We had dinner at a nice restaurant in downtown Santa Monica at about 6pm. I had some of the most delicious broiled pork chops I’ve ever eaten. After dinner we went to a movie and got back to our hotel at about 11pm. Within 20 mins after we got back to our room I threw up, again something that seldom happens to me. Then I got the most terrible gas and diarrhea that I’ve ever experienced.

I knew that it must be some kind of food poisoning and thought, well it will run its course and I shouldn’t take anything to stop it so it will get the poison out of my system. Well, this went on for 5 days!

Finally, we went to Santa Barbara for the rest of our vacation and when we got there I went to a store and bought some Imodium. Bam, that got rid of of it within an hour after the first dose. It’s been 17 years since this horrible experience, and I still remember it like it was yesterday. I hope to never go through something like this again, and if I do, I won’t wait to take something to stop it, to hell with getting the poison out of my system, just give me some relief.

Eddie, you had pork chops and I had eaten sweet & sour pork at a Chinese restaurant.. I think it was the pork. Please rest assured that it will be a long time before I order pork again at a restaurant. Headaches, sweating, and weak. By the next day, toilet paper felt like wood.

Anthony, I can certainly understand where your coming from. That would turn me off hamburgers too. Don't think I lost weight, but felt so weak, wiped out.

I'm pretty much back to normal now, I won't be eating again at that restaurant though.

back in 2006 I caught a bug from a patient!  Viral...very contagious apparently.  His wife was in another hospital with it, his daughter was in our hospital with it, and he was found passed out in an elevator.  They worked him up for a possible cardiac issue which came back fine...but he came to the heart unit to me....which is where the GI symptoms manifested.  2 days later I had it...both ends...and I am obsessive about washing my hands at work.  Tony was in Charlotte visiting his sister and was going to rush home but I forbade him because he would catch it.  My parents live an hour from me and offered to come up but all I needed was for them to both get sick too.  Finally my mother threatened me so I ended up in the ER to get IV fluids.  Also lost 10 pounds and didn't have it to lose.  Haven't had anything like that since.

had montezumas revenge in Mexico

when I was 16. Worst I have ever had. As they say, don't drink the water. I lost 20 lbs and could not eat ANY solid food for almost 2 weeks.
