Hoover A3110 Clanking noise

Hey everyone

My A3110 whilst working well still is starting to make a really annoying clanking noise when the drum is moving.

I have established that the drum is clanking against something when it moves forwards against the outer panel? Its like a banging metalic noise.

I can recreate the noise if I rock the drum forward and back.

The noise is most annoying and its worse when I have a load of towels in the wash which cause the drum to rock a bit.

Any advice greatfully received.

This could be many things.

Suspension spring at the top

Suspension rod at the bottom

Or the mounting under the suspension rod could have cracked, this was the demise of many a Hotpoint.

Maybe part of the wiring harness has come loos.

Best bet is to remove the top and have a good look.

What about making a video of the drum spining with a load and putting it on youtbe, otherwise its just guess work?

Its not even a clanking noise its just like the drum is tapping something on the inside, if I move the washer and inch or so it stops it for a bit but then starts back up.

The drum does not look out of allignment or anything so not sure what it could be.

Have took the top off nothing looks out of place.

Could it be the heater that is flapping about?

My grandfather had a Hoover Ecologic 1300 that corroded its heater retention bracket; a heavy blanket shook it loose.

having read what has been described so far i agree with you Mr Rolls, that is not uncommon fault on old Hoover machines, i have replaced the metal retainer with a nut and bolt.

However it is a strip down job. So Again Richard if you get the machine to one of the wash ins coming up either myself or Mat could look at it for you

IF you unplug the machine take the back off and grip the heater element if the retainer has gone then should be able to wiggle the heating element up and down, also if you push down on it and turn the drum by hand you will hear it rub on the drum.

Failing that then something has gotten between the tub and the drum

Checked tonight and the element is in place and secure.

There is nothing rubbing between the drum either, the noise is like the washer isnt level properly like a creaking sound but it is level.

Hard to describe... but the noise is only when theres a heavy load where the drum is rocking back and forth on the suspension its like metal flexin sort of sound, deffo nothing in the drum.

Cant recreate the noise when the machine is off unless i rock the drum back and forth.

If I lift the machine off its front feet when it is making the noise it goes away so its something at the front of the machine thats in connection with the feet?

Richard it could just be the suspension, it is pretty crude on these machines though it works well.

If you take the top off and push the tub up and down see if it makes the noise then.

If it does could just mean the suspension is a bit dry or worn, kits are available for these machines, again though if your not up to doing it yourself then you will have to wait until you can get some one to do it for you.

Best to check the base plates where the shocks are fixed to it. It may have cracked which can produce a clicking sound with a heavy load pushing down on the fixings. Lots of Hotpoint 95 machines lost there lives to this.

Where would it be cracked?

Are the shocks at the front on the A3110? Thats where the noise comes from.

In fact just checked now, everythings solid nothings cracked.

I pushed a piece underneath where the wheels attach to the frame and there is ever such slight play in one of the things that hold the wheel on, its not a screw though so cant tighten it its like stapled on. Ever so slight play in it.

Not damaged though and if I press that I can get the noise so thats the culprit.

arhh right.

well the front and rear wheels on these machines sit on a shaft which is held in place by a sort of spring clip.

The wheel itself turns on this shaft allowing you move the machine about easily.

What i do with them is remove the shaft and wheel and grease them both this stops any knocking or creaking noises from them

Thanks christ nothing is wrong as such.

If you want to do this you will need to lay the machine on its side.

Below is a picture of a typical wheel arrangement on a later Hoover machine, the shafts are not held in by spring clips but "L" shaped backets rivetted to the base
Also if you look at the rear wheels they are made of rubber and have sprung plate under them to act as a brake, this stops the machine moving forward if it has a very out of balance load

yes hotpoint 95622,
the suspension legs do break on the 95 series and WM range and earlier models. They break on end that attaches to the tub, cant remember ever seeing one break on the other end that attached to the base/ chasis.
Is a pig of a job to do as well as there is very little room to access the securing bolt.
Also the support bar that sits inside the suspension leg on the 95 series is a different size to the WM range.

Anyway moving back to Richards problem with the A3110, if the noise stops when you hold the machine on spin it normally means the noise is a levelling issue. Good way to tell as it eliminates vibration so you can tell the difference between a internal noise and vibration.

The issue is with the front left I think as soon as I take the weight off the wheel the noise goes.

I have put a rubber door stop under the front left so that it takes the weight off the wheel and the noise goes straight away.

I’ve seen at least six machines where the base plate chassis has split across the mounting holes, must have a problem with the press casting at the time. Repaired a couple by welding a plate over and drilling a hole to remount shock.

I am not in the habit of checking out old Hotpoints but about 5 weeks ago we had a mint looking 800 come in and i thought the drum was sitting low so we flipped it over and there were splits in the base plate all around the damper mountings, maybe Hotpoint were trying to get away with a thinner gauge of metal.
Anyway it was repaired the same as you do, two metal plates welded in place and new holes drilled for the dampers.
There you go another old machine that works and has been saved and is in use
