Hello everyone.
Not posted for ages but do have look at site when I get a chance. Hope everyone is keeping well.
Anyway, the point of my post is that I have got a Hoover A3110 and am trying to decide whether to sideline my Miele W980 and use it as a daily driver.
Opinions please :-)

Hoover

I think provided you are prepared to service the machine, suspension kit, possibly motor brushes, check for play on the drum bearings etc, they make an excellent daily driver there are two of us on here that use these type of machines as daily drivers with no complaints.
we can help you out with any thing you need to know
My only advice would be to use Tesco washing powders as they work very well in these machines as regards cleaning, they are extremely low suds and rinse out very easily and are very low scent.

Good luck
Gary

Don't mind maintenance, just need reliability as it will get fairly heavy use. We do at least two loads a day.
I have used it over this weekend in conjunction with the Mile and it has started to make an odd noise. Sounds possibly spider to me,have checked for play in bearings and no drum movement. I have recorded the noise but can't see how to attach file.
I tend to stick to Surf washing powder as it seems to rinse out easily and is one of the few that doesn't affect my daughters eczema. Thanks for the tip though, may well give it a try :-)

noise

the pulley is not loose on the shaft is it? they can sometimes wear where they go on the end of tub shaft, they can make a knock sound when the motor rotates the drum because of play.
Do you know if this machine has the original taper bearings or does it have the later ball bearings as fitted to the logics

Maybe a bit more detail, when washing or spinning, unbalanced load.

Sorry for delay in reply. Hectic week. I don't know of bearings are tapered but they were changed a couple of years ago apparently. If I get a chance over the weekend will whip the back off and check for play.
As I say,I do have a recording of the noise but can't seem to upload it to the site. Any ideas?

is one of the few that doesn't affect my daughters eczem

Not to divert the topic, but I am AMAZED that Surf has no effect on your daughters eczema.

Skin irritation from detergent is, in 99.9% of cases, caused by the chemical perfumes used and nothing to do with the actual washing part of the formula. Surf is very highly scented and uses a lot of these, so I'm shocked that of all the detergents available, Surf is the one that doesn't cause a reaction.

Aquacycle, I know where you coming from. Seems that out of all the detergents I have tried only surf and peril bio seem not to affect her. Weirdly enough, fairy was one of the worst along with ariel and daz.

My pennies worth

It doesn't surprise me that Fairy was the worst because my GP had told me that its quite a harsh deterrent and looking online at various parenting sites it seems to not be a one off (pity because I did quite like it lol) Ecover and Tesco/Sainsbury's non bio powders are ok for my chemical sensitive skin but everyones skin is different :)

Ah, that makes sense - both Surf and Persil are made by Unilever. Ariel, Daz & Fairy are P&G are P&G, so it's obviously something that P&G use in their detergents that is causing the issue.
