George(the man I work with in TriStar sales) mentioned to me today he heard on the TV news Sat night that Hoover was completely closing down their US Manufacturing for vacuums and floor care equipment. They were going to be made in China.I wondered if anyone else has heard anything on this.On a Vacuum cleaner Chat room they commented that people were having problems with the water collection tank on new Hoover Spin Scrub floor machines built in China-the tanks were cracking easily-even after a few months use.The user had to replace the tank 3 times.I wonder if or how this ties in with Maytag combining with Samsung.

What is the world coming to? Nearly every appliance manufacturer, big and small, has cheapened the quality of its goods in some form or fashion. There are absolutely NO "plastic" vacuums in my house for this very reason; threw the last two out (a GE bagless upright & Euro-Pro "Shark" compact canister) in July. Replaced them with two Hoover Dial-A-Matics; they're holding up just fine & work better than the "plastic" machines did. Needless to say I'm sticking to vintage stuff...

With vacuums and most other machines-I too stick to vintage or vintage design-suchs as Kirby or Royal-fan first or "Dirty air" or "traditional design.Hate to see this as well.Have gotten several Hoover Windtunnel bagless machines as trade ins-the filters in them were plugged-no pickup. The owners dumpted the dirt cups but didn't clean the filters.I only have a few plastic machines-A Vortech Force canister(housing is fiberglass reinforced Nylon like power tool houisings) and a new Rainbow. These are the only exceptions. Will need to add some "Dial-A Matics" to my collection-they aren't easy to find here.Haven't run into any during TriStar sales-will see if the Kirby folks and Rainbow folks run into them.I do prefer the "Traditional""Fan First" designes over clean-air designs-the tranditonal design is more effeicient.I have used 3.5A Royals-Electro Hygeine machines that will outclean a modern 12A clean air design vac.And the Royals are METAL.Same with vintage Kirby. They can work as well as the new ones.

I will let you know.

I live within an easy 30 minute (or so) drive of North Canton Ohio, and in today's Akron Beacon Journal (November 28, 2004), there was no mention of Hoover at all. If this is true, it will be front page news here.

I will let you know.

I am now treasuring my 1967 Convertible Model 70, and my WindTunnel Canister of 1997

Lawrence/Maytagbear.

From what's been published recently, Hoover did not have competitive products in the less than $100 price range; which apparantly comprise 40%> of the vacuum sales these days. (Tempo upright--aka bagged Windtunnels @$59 in weekend paper) So in order to offer such stuff and turn a profit, they are going to China.

At this point, they are still manufacturing their more expensive lines in Ohio and Mexico.

Tolivac, I have a 3.5 A Royal that I use in our family room. It is wonderful! It cleans our heavy plush carpet great and is light, and it fits in some rather tight corners around furniture down there.

Thanks for the info on this:

MayTagBear:Great-you live right next to Hoover's headquarters.Yes-I would treasure those older Hoover machines.I have an older(made in USA) Spin Scrub floor machine-Its tanks is still OK.
MagicClean:That makes sense-sounds like Hoover wants to compete against Eureka and Dirt Devil. From what I heard from the local Royal dealers they were saying that Upper scale dirt Deveil models were being introduced for Royal Dealers-the Royal Dirt Devil "Pro-Line"The Famaliar Red Dirt Devil machines were still being made for Wally World and K-Mart.I would have to assume that the Commercial Hoover products are still made here?
Scott55405:Glad you like your older Royal-Like a dummy I got rid of mine! Now trying to get others-Esp the Electro-Hygene" models. In the late 60's or early70's Star Vacuum of the wash DC area had them-one of their dealers had a nice display of them-their polished housings-and colorful Green,Blue and Red bags!!Treat your machine carefully-the Royal Dist here mentions he is having a hard time getting parts for those machines. He has three Royal Commercial machines in for repair. They need fans, cords, beater bars and belts. Its amazing how the commercial Customers treat those beautiful machines! They just bang them up!!I hope that is not a new trend from Royal-It would be stupid of them to drop that metal classic and Everlast Upright line!I really like the ease of use of those Royal uprights-litghtweight and effective-no self-propel transmission required.Disadvantage of the Kirby "G" sereies machines. That transmission adds several pounds to the weight.I use mine regularly all the time too.Got one as a trade in toward a TriStar. Was able to keep it.

CR report

So I see that Consumer Reports favorite vacuum now is Kenmore. And they don't like the "bagless" machines, which I totally agree with, it's a step backwards! The whole point of bags in the first place was to not have to empty cups or cloth bags and have dust flying everywhere. And I hate to think of what those clear plastic housings are going to look at after a few years of abrasive dust flying around in them. The Dyson has an annoying thing of that if you pick it up and push the wrong latch, the tank comes off and the cleaner falls on your foot.

bagless vacs

I totally agree and with CU.Whats the point of the bagless machines? Its just a new tech version of a cloth dump bag vac.the cloth dump bags were easier to use.In the modern machines-not only the dust cup!-you also have to clean the dirt cup filter.that can be messier than dumping the dirt container or a cloth bag.And yes-the plastic housings "cloud Up" from the dirt abrading it.I beleive Dyson has fixed the dirt bin problem on their DC14 model.I look at the Dyson and see a $175-$200 vac NOT a $500 one.For me I will stick to the vintage cloth-paper bag vacs.

Hoover is bad off...I know I used to work for them.....

Yes,

Almost monthly for the last few years we heard horrid reports from Maytag Corporate, about how the Hoover Company; wasn't reporting many huge profits like Maytag wanted.

The big boys down in Newton Iowa becasue of this, began raping the Hoover Compnay of it's own autononomy, and decision making by firing 2/3 of it's upper level management, and closing down underperforming plants ( which in a way is understandable). For example it's Stark county facility that initially made the Hoover Spin Scrub Steam-Vac models and other related products was deactivated and brought back to the main plant on Maple Street.

The Hoover Floormate, w/I am wondering if your talking about here was always made in China as well as the new Flair stick vacs and many of the compact canisters as well. The New Cheap Hoover that replaced the Elite ( the trade name slips me a bit) is also now being produced there and has a selling price comporable to the Eureka Boss II that sells everywhere for $39.95 more or less.

Then after Maytag Corporate raped upper management and manufacturing, they set their sights on everyone else....mainly Hoovers fairly unique company stores and began weeding out I suppose stores that either duplicated, or somehow diddn't fit in to the corporate planning by the rapists..and started closing down reatil outlets.

This is where my four years with the Hoover Company ended VERY bitterly and I will never support Hoover OR Maytag ever again and would live without rather than own one product made by them.

I have my Frigidiare wash and dry, my early 70's Eureka Cordaway Two Speed Automatic Upright upstairs, and my Eureka Empress II Cordaway Roto-Matic that are my main floor machines. ON the lower (basement)level I have a Premier commercial, an in my apt. above the garage I havemy Westy Spacemates, and for the vacuum, a Singer Powermaster Two Speed.....

My Steam Cleaner is a early 1980's Kenmore Spray Mate Steam cleaner with the optional Power-Mate head that does what my Hoover Steam-Vac Widepath used to. If I really want to scrub the beejeesus out of my rugs I have a Kenmore Twin Brush three speed carpet scrubber that I use in conjunction with the machine stated above.

Yeah Im bitter...but there are plenty of products out there that are just as good if not better. And by seeing Maytag Corporate's continued performance Im not far behind in my thinking that they are NOT long for this world. Maytag lost it's scope, and reality of things about 1988 or so, and Hoover lost theirs about 1999 IMHO.

I have a couple of old Hoovers still in the Attic tho, that I packed away the week after loosing my job. I burned all my Hoover Polo Shirts in my fireplace except for my two nice button down ones...and even those are packed away someplace.

I hope Maytag Corporate drowns and someone who knows Hoovers time honored tradition of American knowhow and spirit saves them and restores them to the lustre that they once had. Well Its nice to have a pleasant dream or two....

Chad

Oh yeah and PS...you must think that Im a lu lu...well after loosing the job of your lifetime...where you were happier thatn a puppy with two peters, and making very good money and being able to live well and have a decent future; you'd go a little crazy yourself. Especially when you know for yourself that it was NO fault of your own....
