Hoover D6042 - any good?

Hi guys,
Advice time again. I've put an offer on an house and it has an old Hoover drier in it. Looking at the pics on this excellent forum, it looks like a D6042.

I presume these are a one way dryer but are they any good compared to more modern machines? Does it have a moderate capacity, for example, and are they electric guzzlers compared to newer dryers that tend to like going on fire....

Hi Rob,

I own a Hoover D6042 and in my opinion they are fantastic machines!

As you say they are only unidirectional but I haven't had troublesome issues with tangling or bunching up. The drum takes up more or less the full width of the machine so there is plenty of room for movement and it has this lovely thick black enamel on it - very smooth and retains the heat quite well.

Like most old tumble dryers they are quite noisy. On this machine there is a large sheet-metal or Bakelite (depending on the machine) fan directly behind the drum that emits a droning noise but it's not irritatingly noisy.

They are quite simple dryers and easy to maintain. I highly recommend you remove the rear panel and take out the drum to inspect and clean the elements of fluff if you do decide to take it on. The machine washer is the A3060, A3062 or A3064 (not sure what other models were in the "New Magic" range but there are probably others).

Its certainly a dryer to keep Rob, easy to work on, the capacity is 4.5 kg 9 / 10 lbs but as James says the drum is big, the enamel drum retains the heat and almost acts as an iron as the clothes roll against it, so dropping creases. The great thing with using this dryer now is you will have a faster spin so clothes will dry quicker than the washers of that era...

Thanks for your advice Gents. James, that's the machine alright. It looks mint too. However the house is being surveyed at the moment so it's not guaranteed that we would move in. We have a fairly new Hotpoint dryer anyway with a 6kg capacity. Mike, we no longer have a modern machine, we were using a Hoover 1200 Logic over the summer but are now using a Hotpoint 95490, which I think is more suited to the high use a family of four demands, although that subject is for another day.Mrs M also wants to find room for the 1509/10 top loader, which is proving itself to be very useful...
