I got a hoover model 1178 dial-a-matic today at the will. It is a automatic power drive model and is in good shape. I replaced both belts and put a new bag in it and it runs good. Its a little loud though. I've never owned a dial-a-matic before.........are they loud just by nature or should I take the motor apart and see if it needs cleaned. Also the attachments were missing. Anyone know where I could get a set? Thanks

then DAMs were some LOUD btchs! i hope you have cleaned the red filter at the bottom of the bag chamber. the agitator may also be adding to the noise. greasing the agitator bearings may hush it up a little. id LOVE to see pics of a Hoover Guru taking apart a DAM.

loud DAMs

westy...the DAM was not a quiet machine by any means. If there is not a lot of vibration...I say just use it till it drops. Like David said do lube the brushroll which should help and make SURE that the red filter fits and is very clean. Otherwise your machine will just clean and clean and won't stop. The DAM motors were very strong and well made. I have not seen too many bad ones...just some are louder than others. Email me...I think I have some tools for a DAM if you are interested.

loudness depends on

How the machine was treated...I have heard some DAM's that were whisper quiet and smooth as glass running, and some others that would set your teeth on edge.
The agitator is the first place I'd go to reduce noise. A good greasing of the bearings and cleanout of the agitator will quiet things down significantly.
A noisy motor is due to dirty fans and being with an over filled bag. Lets face it the DAM's filter system is not the best...
Fred's got the disassembly and rebuilding of DAM motors down to a science.
