Hoover Keymatic De Luxe 3223H

Evening folks,

I’ve recently started restoring a Hoover Keymatic De Luxe 3223H from 1970. The cabinet has been sent away for respray and I’m working on the internals in the meantime. Thankfully, it will be in full working order.

However, I require one VITAL part that can no longer be obtained by easy means and nothing else can be used as a substitute - the all important Keyplate. I am aware that a few of these are floating around but I don’t know who has one. Can anyone help me out with a Keyplate or two for this model or can I at least rent one for scanning into a 3D printer?

Milestone Progress!

It gives me great pleasure to tell everyone that someone demonstrating the spirit of community has come forward with a full set of Keyplates for my model! If they are reading this, you know who you are and how thankful I am! I now realise the full potential of this restoration and that the end product is going to be a wonderful machine.

The professionally repainted cabinet is due this week pending COVID restrictions and I’m still chipping away at the internal work, starting with the tub which has cleaned up very well after a descale. Likewise, the inner drum and spider came up a treat and it’s obvious the machine wasn’t run into the ground like the rusty cabinet suggested.

Later this week I’m treating it to a set of new bearings and a bearing seal. I thought I may as well since I have the machine in bits. The clutch unit on the motor requires freeing up and cleaning but I have a new clutch on standby just in case.

The next stage will be fitting everything back into the revitalised cabinet and sorting out any electrical issues, no pressure!

Hi everyone,

I’ve been meaning to share an update on this for a while now but as a “critical” worker spare time is not in good supply and other more easier restorations had got in the way!

I received the professionally sandblasted and resprayed cabinet a few weeks ago and I’m still pinching myself at how well it looks! It really was visually shot and I had doubts about whether I could pull this off or not. It has been repainted inside and out so it’s practically as if it came fresh out of the metal shop at the Hoover factory in Merthyr Tydfil. A good job was done!

The original wheels and castors which were seized solid with rust have been replaced with much better ones from an old Spinarinse I parted out and the castors came from a spare sloping front Keymatic wreck that I got for parts to keep my 3224 and 3226 in good health.

The tub has been repaired, repainted and reassembled ready for carefully into the cabinet this weekend all being well! The motor, gearbox and clutch have been given the once over ready for fitting to the tub when it’s reinstalled and everything else should fall into place thereafter.

I’m aiming to have everything sorted by the end of November if everything goes to plan so here’s hoping!

The cabinet looks amazing. I’ve always been fascinated by the clutch and gear arrangement on these machines, such a change to the 3224 and 3226 machines. Would be great to understand this more, is your mechanism all good, or do you have to overhaul?
