Hey

I have a ‘really old’ hoover tumble dryer

I did have a new one, and that one broke so I was given this as a hand me down from a family member.

Now it works, but the timer has stopped working over the years and now you have to manually turn the dryer off as it doesn’t time out itself.
It is actually really good and dries stuff really quickly!

I laugh and joke that it should be in some kind of museum but I don’t really have much Information on the dryer and I can imagine the energy consumption isn’t good on it at all.

Are these things worth anything these days?

Realistically , these were of their time. Now they’re mostly junk.

Things have moved on a lot since then.

Heat pump is where it’s at now.
A heat pump will pay for itself in its lifetime with the electricity savings and probably save enough for a little towards its replacement. They use around 1/2 a unit of electricity to dry between 7-10kg of cottons.

These old dryers use around 2/3 units of electricity for a 4kg cotton load. That’s all they hold. Timing needs to be right or you over dry and crease things. They run quite hot, elastics in clothes degrade.

Would personally use it until it conks out. Then buy a decent heat pump. Not worth spending any money on it for general use.

Basically was Hoover’s version of this, the Maytag Halo Of Heat. Same concept, except Hoover used positive airflow (pushes air through the drum) while Maytag was negative airflow (pulls air through the drum).

One of the best dryers ever made. Efficient, reliable and had a great reverse action to dry evenly and reduce creasing.

Are they worth much? Probably not. Especially as that one is missing the chrome ring around the door. But they’re good dryers.

However like Rob said above, they’re of their time. In 1986, you probably couldn’t have made a better choice but heat pump is where it’s at on the modern market. Especially with the cost of living being as high as it is.

Heat pump may be more efficient, but is not fun when the evaporator and condenser coils clog up which will bog down the performance big time. May save on energy costs, but won’t save anything if it’s going to nickel and dime you in maintenance costs.

Hoover Electron Tumble Dryer

Welcome to AW, a classic of a Hoover Electron Dryer you have there , it certainly outlasted the modern one you said you had , if it's just the timer needs repair / replacing then they do come up either new or recycled .

Heat pump dryers can be all the rage but come with limitations , ie time , it's often easier to sort and dry 2 loads in your Electron rather than justify spending £350 / £400 on the cheapest new heat pump.

Here are a few parts numbers you can search on eBay , selling sites etc , can you confirm the model number , is it a D6292/4.

Let us know how you get on , understand if you decide to go for new , I'll ask around to see if anyone has a spare within the group .
