Hoover UK - Dishwashers

Was doing a google trawl for matchboxes and liberators and accidentally stumbled across a great shot showing the Hoover 4834 Super-jet 12, with a decent write up describing the design and features of the machines.

Certainly is an unusual looking, but nevertheless smart, dishwasher. I wonder whether the use of colour in the buttons was a nod to the matchbox keymatic 3243H, which was still in production at the time - circa 1974.

As such, i decided to add the dishwashers to my spreadsheet and just wanted to run the info i have by you all. Here goes....

4804 AUTO-JET......circa 1967 (first Hoover UK dishwasher)
4808 SUPER-JET......circa 1969

4805 AUTO-JET......circa 1970
4809 SUPER JET......circa 1970

From the one image i have seen of the machines, it appears that the 1978 machines were the first to actually have a semblence to the rest of the family, having a polished metal facia, orange piped edge and the A3060/D6042 style programmer dial (albeit left hand drive).

It's at this point that my knowledge of Hoover dishwashers ends. Is there anyone who can fill in the gaps to the end of the Ecologics or correct any errors.

Hoover Dishwashers

I remember some years ago a Hoover dishwasher with a glass door on demonstration in i think Rumbelows, it was great to see what was happening inside the machine

When you think back that machines were designed by engineers who new what they were doing rather than todays designs being knocked up on a computer.........

Much obliged for that information - will prove very useful.

I was chin wagging with Rob (Aquarius1984) a couple of nights back and mentioned the period 1979 through 1981 - basically when the wonderful A3108 Electronic 800/A3110 Electronic 1100/A3112Keymatic and A3114 Selectmamatic series were about.

I have never seen a dishwasher from this era (to the best of my knowledge) or at the very least in this style.

Does anyone know whether Hoover:

a) carried on the older mid 1970s machines through to the start of the electrons (see initial post for this series)
OR
b) whether Hoover took a break from dishwashers altogether and waited to introduce the Electron style with the D7114 and D7116.

There just seems to be a bit of a hole in the first years of the 1980s.

I can imagine what such a machine would look like - classy bi-metal facia strips in smart brown and polished silver, with a programmer dial edged in orange with orange lining and detailing.
maybe even with a time line - as per keymatic and selectamatic..............letting my imagination run wild on that last bit.

You're welcome! Yes, that is the "Crystaljet 7000", D7420.

I liked the name "Crystaljet"; to me it sounded elegant. I can't say that "Optima" had the same exclusivity!

I have just moved into "His Nib's" place, permanently, so the place is looking like a Jumble Sale! LOL. When I saw your posting, above, I actually had the Data Books a few feet away from me; so there we are!

I don't think that Hoover always made their own dishwashers; I seem to remember in 1990, when I worked in Currys, that a Spanish-made machine was sold as a Currys's own brand "Mondia". This was the spitting image of the top of the range Hoover model from the previous year (1989?). I'm certain that this own-brand had buttons and a separate progress disc behind a circular window, on the white control panel.

A short time later in mid-1990, Currys got the new Hoover "Crystaljets", D7188; the series that matched the "Logic" automatics.

That machine is the 'AUTO-JET' - either model 4804 (circa 1967) or the pretty much identical model 4805 (superceded the 4804 in circa 1970).

Great looking dishwashers - saw one about 15 years ago waiting outside a house, in my home village, for the council to take it away. Was immaculate and well cared for - had a gander inside and remember thinking it was a real shame.

Just like the matchboxes though, i seriously doubt one of these will resurface. Methinks they are all buried underground in landfill unfortunately.

Hoover dishwasher

Alan that one you posted my sister had that model and used it in the pub kitchen until it died and was replaced with a Grey fronted Zanussi, It worked well as long as you didn't over load it and managed to close the little dispenser for the powder. I recall it was rather quiet and did a great job.

Thank you for posting the Autojet brochure for us to see.

Austin, the ironic thing was that, if your sister had the Autojet from Alan's brochure, it was actually manufactured by Zanussi, marketed as Rex in Italy. I am pleased to have both the Autojet and Superjet in the Sutton collection

I have seen a programme on TV some time ago about the model that Paul posted to open this thread. Apparently Hoover did spend a ton of money researching this dishwasher and building a production line in Merthyr, but they massively over estimated the market for this machine and it was a commercial disaster, not selling the numbers anticipated.

I have a brochure dated 11/79 shown below, this machine was made in West Germany

I had the misfortune to buy a Hoover dishwasher in 1988 (cannot find a picture on my computer) which I think was made in Spain if I remember right. It was a terrible dishwasher

A Crystaljet like this (won in a competition) replaced our 1981 Indesit in late 1992 (the Indesit's door was falling off with rust). Washed well and lasted up to 2002 when it was replaced by a Zanussi after its timer failed.

Thank you I never knew those Hoover dishwashers were Zanussi's no wonder it lasted a while
