Well it could always be worse.
Consider what happened to Hoover in Australia. Hoover Australia was sold off to pay for that disasterous airline ticket promotion in the UK. That was okay because the new company, Southcorp kept the Hoover factory in Meadowbank in Sydney and they still manufactured the same line of washing machines.
Then Southcorp decided to get out of whitegoods and sold out to archrival Email who manufactured Simpson and Westinghouse. Emails plan was to have Hoover and Simpson just for laundry and Westinghouse and Chef for cooking and Westinghouse and Kelvinator for refrigeration. However Email closed the Meadowbank factory that made Hoover and they became Simpsons inside with the Hoover body on the outside.
Then a few laters Email was taken over by Electrolux and they dumped many of the brand names in a simplified plan to have Simpson as its value brand, Westinghouse as its feature brand and Electrolux as the delux brand. Hoover washing machines are no longer sold in Australia. Even worse, Electrolux has closed the Simpson factory in Adelaide and now Simpsons and Westinghouses are all going to be imported Electrolux products.
However In the UK Hoover is still a feature brand positioned somewhat above Candy. It has an even greater presence in continental Europe. They have made interesting machines still like the first and second Vision. The Six/Seven range and Nextra are still nice looking machines. So while we may all miss the old Hoover and their simple and unique square door front loaders, at least Hoover is alive and still interesting us while Hoover is dead and gone in Australia.
Interestingly Maytag has sold Hoover frontloaders in Australia badged as Maytag. I have one and its been a great washing machine that washes quickly and has a power jet too for some added drama. Now that Maytag is owned by Whirlpool who knows what would happen but if Hoover was to sell its range of washers in Australia again there are plenty of people who would buy them.
