hoovermatic 5090

i got this machine from ebay described as having no pump but usefull for spares as no one else seemed to want it i bid and got it for 10 pounds well worth it for the motors alone .I went to collect it yesterday the lady selling it said she had just bought her first automatic and was not altogether thrilled with it .She took me round the back of her house to a kind of skullery lean too affair where the hoovermatic was there was a Burco boiler in there along with another Hoovermatic an older model with round corners i couldnt tell which model it was .no controls on the front just the Hoover round logo it had its lid on so i couldnt see the top i suspect it was a 3310L maybe the one without the heater i asked her what was happening with that and she said she hadnt used it for 30 years but was keeping it in case she didnt like the auto but if she decided to get rid she would call me so i loaded up the 5090 and came home via Redcar Saltburn and Whitby thought i would make a day of it . Had a look at the Hoovermatic today both motors are good in fact everything is ok apart from the missing pump and the tub to pump hose however the spin to pump hose is perished apart from that it just needs a little TLC so i may fix it up rather than strip it for spares

was a bit stiff so opened it up to lubricate lots of dead spiders in this machine

what was the extra hole for

i have always wondered what the extra hole was for anyone know?

bit of rust

i have yet to see a Hoovermatic that dosnt have a little rust somewhere the drain hose was present i took it off to clean it.its also unusual to see all three cleats present they snap off easily

the pulsator

was a little loose so i took it out greased it up then refitted it it runs really well almost silent just the steady hum of the motor.I have a new pump in my spares box so if i can get the internal hoses i may fix it up rather than use it for spares

came from Hartlepool anyone that knows the area will know it has a really bad problem with limescale this machine had a lot of it stuck to the walls of the spin drum i suspect the limescale would have taken the pump out

Round edged Hoovermatic

To the best of my knowledge the round edged hoovermatics with no controls on the front would be 3301 or the later 3309 - these are the deluxe models with heater and would have had an oblong nameplate on the front. The models with just the Hoover roundel on the front were no heater models although I suppose there would have been a more basic model with 2KW heater also (known as the Hoover 65 on the machines with controls on the front).

The 3310 model you mentioned above (its not easy to keep track of all these models) in fact was one of these versions in the square edged (wash-dog) series with white trim and grey control deck Vs the black trim and silver deck of the DL version.

While you were up that direction you could have popped in to see "Lancethecook", a good friend with a great collection of wringer washers as well as a couple of twinnies

yes that would have been interesting [i do have a soft spot for a wringer washer]i must just say i didnt go all the way to Hartlepool just for the washing machine .Although i live in leeds i am actually from stockton on tees i usually make the 60 mile trip about once a fortnight for sunday lunch with my family so thought i would kill two birds with one stone so to speak .my favourite hoover twintub has to be the third incarnation [three controls on the top two square lids and the drain hose fitted into a hole in the righthand corner of the wash tub i think it was the 3310L i always thought from the washdog onwards they were a bit flimsy [that aufull vibration if the spinner was not loaded properly i have got round that problem with the 5090 by stuffing strips of carpet underlay in the small gap between the was tub and the outer cabinet also jammed some into the gap around the outer spin drum if you have one of these machines try it the diffrence is unblievable

the dirty clothes dont stand a chance on wonder it only took 4 mins .this is the one i remember as boy i remember much later in the machines life 2 of the 3 rubber mounts that the spin motor sits on snapped my dad did a sterling repair by fitting three cotton reels with bolts through the middle it ran to the end of its life with the cotton reels still in place .That machine was 25 years old when it eventually replaced purely because it was just worn out washing for a family of 7 [mum used it about three times a week ]
