It's going to be like new

Anthony you are doing a great job and the machine will be like new once you have finished !!!!
I love the way you have painted the base ! Brilliant . You have inspired me to do a long awaited repair on my machine but not quiet sure how the spinner comes apart ???
I have a new resilient mount and drive belt to put on .
Would you be able to explain how the spinner dismantle s ???
The four screws are out the top , belts off and I have removed the upper collar Allen screw from the top collar under the mount . Where do I go now ???? I can see another Allen screw on the drive wheel . ???? I would really appreciate your advise . Thanks Darren

HI Darren

If you have managed to get the ring off under the spin can the next thing is to separate the shaft from the drive wheel .first remove the Allen screw then its a case of wiggling the thing back and forth till it comes off .You wont be able to turn the drive wheel because there is a key in there a small half moon shaped bit of metal be care full you dont loose it .hears a couple of photos that might help .Sometimes a little heat helps but dont use a naked flame i like to use a hot air gun

It worked

Anthony thanks so much ,managed to get it all apart !!!!
I used a cooks blow torch to heat it up !!! Was mindful not to set the whole thing up in flames !
The new resilient mount I have looks identical to what I have take off but the brass bush is smaller so it doesn't fit ????
Saying that the old one is fine and I think the carbon face seal mount had pushed out the mount as there was lots of sand and crud underneath.
I've given it a good clean and bonded it in with silicone.
The inside of the cabinet has the tell tale signs of water leaking as there are water marks present. Will give it a good clean down and put it back together
I used it yesterday and there were multiple puddles on the kitchen floor .. I will put some photos on when I get further into the works !!! Thanks again so much for your advice. Best wishes Darren

great work

glad you got it all apart but when you put it back together you have to really push the ring with the allen screw up hard before tightening the screw .Theres a spring inside the rubber mount that has to be compressed a little so you get a good seal

Amazing !

Hello Antony

You're doing an amazing job there ! Now then do you have any knowledge of Hoover keymatics? There's about 10 of us with them all in differing states of repair ! Expert knowledge is always welcomed !

Keymatics Hmmmm

Have to think about that one .Its a long time since i touched a KM.In the meantime can anyone help me with this problem .I always take photos when dismantling something but this time i have dropped the proverbial so to speak.I have taken countless pics of the Hoovermatic over the last few weeks and they have come in really useful but i cant find a single one with this spring assembly in it.I know its something to do with the rod that switches the spinner on but thats about it so come on guys put me out of my misery tell me where it goes.I cant go any further itll its on

Hi Anthony

I remember in the past this very same memory lapse happening to me, just dug out the notes, from, what I can tell the spring end hooks round the pivot split pin at the switch end of the rod that goes up to the spinner lid, the other end looks like it hooks through a hole on the front edge of the washtub, so when looking at the set up from the back of the machine it goes at about 45 degrees from the switch pivot point to the wash tub. so as the tub is out it's no wonder you can't see where this part goes. Hope that jogs your memory, Mathew

This afternoons eforts

Well i put the spring on where i think it belongs i am sure someone will tell me if its wrong .All it does is give the spinner lid a bit of springiness when lifting it up.The large washtub hose split when i tried to push it on so i cut about half an inch of it and it seems to be ok .theres a new bit of hose from the spin pump to the valve.Spin can back in and all belts on.Had a problem with the pulley where the spin and pump belts fit one small washer the wrong way round and it wouldn't turn took me ages to figure it out.Flex back on thats a major operation in itself [its tough stuff that old hoover ribbed flex ]and a new plug fitted [when i say new i mean something newer than what was on ] Then theres that rubber trim around the knob on the front took ages to get it right.Just need to get a couple of new jubilee clips [dont like the way those wire ones dig into the hoses]for the spinner pump hose and its ready for some water so keep your fingers crossed lads

I'm sure someone will tell me. lol

ok I will lol, just looking at photo 8 above, I can see you have the spring hooked through the hole on the rod connecting the switch to the lid. the spring hooks over the split pin, inside the u section that forms the actual hinge between the switch and the connecting rod. I understand if this looks wrong as the holes on the rod look more likely, but the effect is to both spring the lid open and closed, similar to a micro switch.

I have to add it's looking a fantastic restoration, well done

Mathew

STUNNED

I have been watching this thread Anthony, and it is an inspiration...............to have another person who knows what they are doing with these machines is such good news, more machines can be saved and renovated to such a high standard.
Thank you very much for bringing this machine and yourself to this group.
Gary

the spring

Thanks Mathew
yes i see what you mean having the spring where i have it works to a degree but when the lid is down the spring is slack .Putting it where you suggest gives it that extra tension.just another question while were on about the spring [which end would you put it on the switch end or the end that attaches to the wash tub? dont suppose it matters just want to get it right.Well i have just spent the last couple of hours botching up the split wash tub hose it looks a bit like a dogs back leg but after taking the plunge [so to speak ]and filling up with water i was really surprised that there was not one leak any where and it pumps out really well .next i poured a bucket full of water into the spin dryer and again no leaks so that has to be a first for me [usually when i strip a machine down to this extent theres always a leak from some where]any way guys keep your fingers crossed because tomorrow im going to switch the HEATER on that should be interesting .I have vivid memories of my mums Hoovermatic boiling my sisters nappies the machine was plugged into the only socket there was in the kitchen that being the electric cooker point i distinctly remember the plug getting bhot and the flex on the machine being warm to the touch

just to say

thanks for your kind comment guys .I do get a lot of pleasure out of this kind of work as im sure most other members do i find as i get older just getting something going wont do any more these days i want the thing at its best mechanically and cosmetically and i am afraid messing with a modern machine just leaves me cold .Last year our 5 year old Candy broke down [hole in the outer tub]it was unceremoniously dragged outside quickly repaired then bunged back in the wash house All i could think was theres 2 hours i wont get back having said that it sits there happily gobbling up dirty washing like theres no tomorrow so i cant complain really can i theres just something about these old machines that makes them so much more interesting most of my family had the various models available Hoover Hotpoint Servis Parnall Ect and as a young boy they fascinated me and of course theres that smell of warm soap and oil mixed toghther you never forget that do you? I also have a thing for vacuum cleaners but we wont go there at least not on this site

It's just great

Anthony its great to spend some time and achieve something !! You have certainly done this with this little gem . There are so many areas to problem solve on an old machine which often involve phone calls ,texts and what saps to other friends to help resolve .looking forward to seeing the progress . Good luck with the ongoing tests, but in particular the heater !!!!
