Hotpoint 1504 service information

Hello all,

I have a Hotpoint 1504 which I am about to try to resurrect. Last used about 8 years ago the machine has developed a few problems, most of which I can fix but I am unsure about the operation of the brake (or is it a clutch?) in the gearbox. Also there are a few wires disconnected.

Can anyone point me to a source of a service manual or even just a wiring diagram?

There is a brake and a clutch! The brake is an electrically operated one with a solenoid. If I recall correctly there is a centrifugal clutch for the drive to the drum and if that is worn it won't spin. Hopefully someone else on here has a similar toploader and can help, as my memory is not good and I only ever did a few of these machines.

I have a 1504 and reconditioned it about 7 years ago, it came from two old ladies who were sister's but hardly used it. It needed a new relay and a few other bits but it has been running everyweek for the last 5 years.
I would really be sad to loose it.

Your machine looks very good. I think I've seen that photo in an archived thread.

My machine looks a bit tatty but is generally in reasonable condition. Once I've got it working properly again I shall probably treat it to some paint and a general tidy up.

Hi Keith.

Your Hotpoint 1504 look lovely. I have a Hotpoint 1509 and thinking of getting it reconditioned. Are you still able to buy parts for the 1509 and do you think it would be worth reconditioning . The machine is in great condition and use it a lot.

I have popped that information in the post to you today Ian, hopefully you can make some sense of it..if you need any further info just drop me a line.

Paul, you can find the odd spare part on ebay etc, but they are few and far between, i am not sure, but i think this machine was in production when Hotpoint had their big fire, and like the English Electric machines, many parts were distroyed, I maybe wrong though. My machine has been used about 2/3 times a week for the last 4years constantly, and is still going strong, and without too many weird noises.

I'm even more jealous that you have a 1504 than Paul has a 1509 but one day....I can dream. Keith's machine brings back memories of my Mum's 1504 back in the 70s.

Anyway, I have been repairing a much newer 9605 as it was leaking badly and found a couple of good websites for spare parts so you might have luck with them. One is yourspares.co.uk and the other one which seemed to have a lot of the older parts was electricalsales.co.uk

I'm hoping to get time this weekend to get mine up and running again

A good day for the 1504.

The service information arrived - thanks again Keith.

I've run the machine through a full cycle with no water to test everything apart from the heater and there were no obvious problems.

Looks like a couple of hoses replaced and a tidy up of the wiring should see another working washer. Oh and I need to do something about the rear wheels which are far from round.

Hotpoint 1509

Hi Keith.

I am thinking of doing up my 1509. My main concern is finding parts for the machine and is it worth doing up. I have been on a few sites and founds parts for the 1509/1 1509/10, but nothing for my 1509/5. I wondered would parts for the 1509/1, 1509/10 fit my machine.

Is there anything specifically wrong with it? Most of the parts for the 15 series seem to be interchangeable - I think the basic mechanics didn't alter too much it was more the electrical items as each model was facelifted.

Its similar with my 3605 and the previous models before. I managed to replace all the seals but not all of the part numbers match those in the service manual. However, the parts tend to list which models they cover which is how I managed.

Its all up and running now with no leaks - just got to adjust the interlock so the lid opens more smoothly, tidy it up. Let me know if you get bored with yours and I'll swap LOL

Hotpoint 1509

Hi Stephen.

The machine works fine. I would just like to recondition it. The problem I have is finding parts to replace. I notice you can still buy parts for the 1509/10, but dont know if these will fit my date code 5.

I have been on Yourspares website and posted a few quesions asking if parts for date 10 fit date code 5.

In the service manual it says the 1509/10 is similar to the 1509/5, my machine has the bio button and writing instead of numbers on the facia.

There were 4 versions of the 1509 sold in the UK, each with subtle tweaks:

the 1509/01, 1509/02, 1509/05 and 1509/10, with the letters after the / being the version...

The date code in my 1509/05's case is the '95' part of the serial number, which equates to November 1977.

Weirdly the preserved 1701/01 and 1720 dryers and 1828/02 front loading liberator de luxe we also have, were also ALL built in date code 95!

Re the differences - all I can offer you is the relevant page from the service manual - states the differences of one 1509 over another, based on its introduction month.

I think the page might originally have been posted by Lee - whoever it was, thanks for the scan.

An update - good and bad news...

Well, I've had the machine running and I'm happy to say that everything worked. The bad news is a leak at the top of the support tube - probably caused by corrosion as the bellows seal appears to be in good condition as far as I can see.

Can't see any way of getting to the top of the support tube without removing the drum which is not a job I'm looking forward to. However, I have managed to remove the tripod and after undoing the clamp the drum is now free on the shaft. I guess the next step is to remove the casing so the drum will lift out - quite how I'll support the control panel remains to be seen. Expect another report in a couple of weeks.
