Well it has got here (well it's at Richard's for the moment - thanks again Rich for sneaking this in for me!). It is a late model 1509/05 - from somewhere between December 1977 and June 1978. It came from the Lincolnshire coast where it hadn't been used for years, so it was dirty, dusty and FULL of limescale and sand.[this post was last edited: 10/9/2010-12:14]

So we took the back off for a look. The hard-board cover was warped, so we expected some leak issues...and you can see that the chassis is a rather flaky and rusty. It seems most of this is due to the foam-breaker in the over-flow being rotten which will allow over-splash to drip down the tub. The corrosion on the chassis at the bottom of the bowl is from this. The air-break on the fill-flume is also warped and drips down the back cover during hot-fill. Whoever had it must have had VERY hot tap water! Note the amount of Skegness limescale in the pressure chamber!!

Hotpoint Toploader geeks will note that it is a late model 1509/05 - two-pole motor, high-position drain outlet and electric flyback thermostat version. Alas not the original drain hose - grey plastic thing...yeuck...[this post was last edited: 10/9/2010-12:14]

Having given the pump a turn by hand (and yes it was stuck) we added a few litres of hot water and, with ELCB on the socket, fired her up for a spin. The motor came to life immediately, but nothing came out until we heard a gravelly noise and a load of ground up limescale came out of the drain hose. Then a noisy bang as the brake released, well sort-of released...it makes a skating noise while it spins so either the band needs adjusting or the solenoid is on the way out. The tub ramped up perfectly to a incredibly quiet spin (so much quieter than the 9605) and we were brave enough to consider filling it for a wash.

We filled it with hot water and everything works!! Heater, load levels, programmer and it washes really quietly. Again the pump was full of crap in wash direction, so no recirculation on the filter-clean. A quick waggle of the hose and hurrah - it puked another load of scale into the filter clean tray! Apart from the brake noise, the machine is really quiet and smooth - brilliant!

So - it works, really, really well. It needs some work - the chassis needs sanding and respraying, the bellows has a tiny drip (no surprises there then) and the cabinet, console wrapper, ends and lid cover need sanding and respraying. It has an transitional tub - dark enamel like the later ones but with a blue enamel cast iron balance ring on the top. Unfortunately it doesn't have the cover on the filter-clean tray, but hey - its in great shape otherwise considering...

Here is the timeline before we cleaned it up - you'll see the console wrapper is very rusty[this post was last edited: 10/9/2010-12:15]

More pictures...you can see the buttons are ok-ish. The white one is rotting (has anyone got a spare they would trade?), the dark purple are faded but fine and the mauve is fine too. The latching mechanism is a bit dodgy - probably full of gunk too.

Hotpoints

Im glad you got this one David, and it has been saved form Skegness :-)........
Nothing seriously wrong though just shows what good machines these are.
Well Done
Gary

More..the 1509 goes into store now while we move to Ireland, but once we're settled there it will come out, be rebuilt and I'll bring it back to put into use!

Cheers Gary - I know its not an Oooovaah, but for a Hotpoint, its a damn good machine!

D x

Ps - well done with the snazzy keymatic - looks fab! You doing some pics?

Hi David, I can't get over how good the lid hinge looks. When you think how dirty and scaled up it was when we first started, it looks amazing. Had a great time with you today testing her out and doing abit of cleaning and detailing. So glad you've got a purple Hotpint top loader at least, you've been after one for ages.

Rich

Hotpoint

Congrats David, glad you got it sorted...looks fine, the giveaway is those back plastic hinge plates and it looks fine....not so the chassis, is the rust just on the edge or has it gone further??

I think Crewe have all the spare good buttons, I`m sure Paul will pop in later!!! I used tipex on my white one to build up the dissolving pitted layers, and then a coat of acrylic paint, looks okay...

Oh BTW, "Sneaking it in" is Richards middle name...LOL

Hi Mike

Yeah - the tub deck came up really well - there was a LOT of scale and gunk on the hinge plate and all over under the lid, but it did come away with a little effort. You can see it in the 'before and after' pics! The rust on the chassis seems superficial, but if it isn't it can be replaced as it is the same as on all other right through to the 9605. Richard is doing his best to keep things neat and tidy, but I expect more will be snuck in soon!

Paulc - yeah there are a few of these durable machines out there. Mark (somewhere in Scotland) has one of the earlier versions of the same model run.

David

Gone to earth

Well it's in storage now for a while, until we get moved and settled in somewhere in Ireland, at which stage it will come out, be rebuilt and shipped over - miss it already!

D

PS - big thanks for the help and the hilarity to Rich and Mathew!

Congrats to David!

Hiya.

Really pleased that you finally have layed your hands on a purple toploader. Know that you have been hankering for one for a fair old while.

Your 1509/05 and Richards 15690 look superb together, with the matching worktops making them look right at home together.

When Ricahrd was going through his previous trauma, after 'sneaking' a fair few too many machines into a confined space, I had mentioned to him that he could line up his toploaders against the back wall and plonk the table infront of them. The result would have been a wonderful sideboard affair.
Seeing the two machines together, in the piccy above, has convinced me that they would have looked great - a 1504, a 15690 and 9605 all next to one another with worktops in place. You'd have hardly noticed them! lol:-)

Imagine a line up of all the different versions too! model 1500 (where aret thou?) through to 9605. be brill.

Bloody buttons!
I will have a look and see if we have any spare top loader buttons. Unfortunately its the white ones that really go bad on all purple Hotpoints. They have a major propensity to 'go off' and crumble up. The other colours just seem to fade and still go off, but nowhere near as badly as the white ones.

Luckily one of the first components myself and Rob acquired, after starting collecting together, was the entire facia etc off a 1509/05 (piccy below). The buttons were sound too and these have now found their way onto the 1509/05 that I bought, as part of Project Matchbox Rescue in Plymouth.

Haven't seen my 1509/05 properly yet, but when i do I will post some piccies of her.

If we dont have any decent spare buttons I would suggest doing what Mike did, as the result is rather good. Just add that sealing layer, to try and prevent any further deterioration.

Paul
