I sympathise with you. They are such a sod to get off. I struggled to get my 3 legged puller to secure onto the tripod but I fixed it on between the drive nut arms and it eventually managed to shift with the blow torch and increasing pressure on the puller. Trouble was I didn't have a nut to protect the top of the drive shaft so was using washers balanced on it and the puller kept falling off. Still perseverance paid off in the end.- I've attached a link to the type I used - is yours the same?
I didn't do anything to the gearbox so would be great to see some pics on how you get on.
