Hi Everyone, I live in Ireland and my parents have an old Hotpoint Super Electronic 18340 in the shed out the back. I am wondering if anyone has restored any 18340's ?

Hi Malachi,
Great to see another Irish member, I'm from Donegal! I've never worked on a 18 series before but the internal design is more or less the same as the 95 series that followed on from your parents machine therefore most spare parts are readily available.
Is there anything wrong with the machine? If you need any advice just send me an email and I'll be glad to help.

Hi James,
Thank you for your response. I was 2 years old when my parents moved into the house. I think they bought that in 1979/1980. I used to love to sit in front of it and watch it wash.I think it lasted until 1984/5 and it has been in the back ever since- it is rusty now on the front but nothing a little sanding and spray paint wouldn't get rid of. As far as the workings- I think maybe the motor went? Anyways- There is a lot of junk on it and around it but it has been dry all that time. Do you think I should restore it ? lol

Hi Malachi,
You're spot on with the year of production! This model was part of the 1979/1980 range. If you have time to paint the front and find out what's wrong with it then the rest is a doddle. I may even have a motor that would fit this if that is the problem. As Luke says, if you do need to part with it I may be able to give it a home in Donegal as part of my collection otherwise Luke may be able to arrange something.

We had this machine, bought in November 1979, it was £179 from the co op department store in Cardiff, back in the 70's inflation and interest rates were high and mum has told me how you didn't buy anything you didn't need, we had several years without a machine at all, so we were never going to get anything other than the most basic model that did the job. It was probably going to be either a hoover or hotpoint, and presumably this was the best buy at the time. And just like you, I frequently watched the entire cycle, 2, 5 and 7 were mums usual programmes with the economy button in as we usually had a tank of hot water in the morning. And I bet you still know every click of the timer lol.
Ours lasted 13 years and was still going well, but we had our grandparents 9530 1000 plus which was obviously newer and we didn't need to. It did have 3 sets of brushes,1 bearings and 2 door boots.
I would perhaps guess your motor failure could have been brushes, as I generally observed the original brushes to last 5/6 years in a normal domestic setting, but obviously that's only speculation.
Well yes why not see what you can do to get it going again, as James says, plenty of spares still available.

It may have been the Bank Holiday weekend in August because I remember our shop was closed and we were in our back yard with the hose and splashing about in a wash basket.M father collected it that day because he would have been able to plumb it in. Like you - we bought ours from an electrical outlet store that had shops all over Ireland - They were the ESB(Electricity Supply Board) shops that sold kitchen appliances, washing machines etc.
Yes I remember the 'click's and that distinctive 'spin' noise lol.
I will be at my parent's home this weekend so I will take pictures-I hope it is not too far beyond repair.

Hotpoint 1800 Series
Welcome to the club Malachy, lots to read and view and starting with the Hotpoint 1800 series you are in great company, the backbone of Hotpoint in the 70`s, great machines and simple to work on, parts getting scarce but more available than many other series....I never had the Liberator series myself until now being a Servis family but my Aunt and cousins had the Purple series and bronze sets...
Many of us have the instruction manuals as well so fire away when you need advice etc..

It's a long time since i saw a picture of it wow- yes that is the machine!The buttons are present but the door release button is broken- you have to push a screw driver in the side of the door for it to pop open.

Finally - so there is still a 18340 out there. Excellent news.
The silver fascia range machines that have generally surfaced have always been the 18580 and, to a lesser extent, the 18680.
Nothing has been heard of either 18340 or 18380 for years.
Then a couple of weeks ago a 18380 was found and then you arrive on the scene with a 18340 potentially to restore!
As mentioned above, parts are generally available for them still and bodyshell panels are removable and re-sprayable.
There are a few threads on the forum showing 18-series restorations, which will help show you the way if needs be.
Also there is advice a plenty on the forum and James not too far away.
No matter how rusty it may be, pop us some photos on the thread, when you have them.
The last time I saw a 18340 would be the early 1990's and the last time I saw a 18380 (until recently) would be the mid 1980s! Barring the Microtronic versions, the 18340 and 18380 really appear to be elusive.
