Hi George

There are several reasons why a Hotpoint door could be jammed shut. One of them is the part you describe which is called the pecker. With some older Hotpoint models, there is a cable that runs from the door interlock to the motor. When you operate the door catch or button, this part "pecks" down onto the drive belt or the end of the armature's shaft. If the drum is moving, the pecker will slip on the rotating belt or armature and disengage the door interlock. If the drum is not moving, the pecker meets resistance and the door opens.

But I need to know how to fix this back onto the machine.

To open the door...

Pull the white plastic bit at the end of the cable while opening the door as normal. That will get it open for you. The pecker assy should clip on the to the motor frame with a clip. If thats missing try cable ties.

posts further down the list are relevant to you.

I also found (google search on hotpoint door pecker) other people saying the clip which holds the pecker is weak and it's common enough to lose the clip that holds it together. Someone said you can use a cable tie to hold it to the motor instead.

I did one years ago (they were sold here badged as a GE machine) and the plastic pecker was wrecked, I fabricated a new one from a piece of aluminium strip, it was ugly but it worked. (the correct part was fiercely expensive over here.)

whoever designed this door pecker system should have been drowned at birth.
