Hotpoint 9605 humming !

And it's humming a tune I don't like !

So I'm asking for your advice

This is a hotpoint top loader I have in my mini wash room I started a load today and on program 5 40 c wash it fills with hot and cold and mixes for a few bursts to mix water as it tried to do this the motor hummed as if it was seized I stopped it removed back and turned motor all seemed well I continued on with wash and as it filled it still hummed but only briefly and washed and span fine , it was about 3/4 of a load of socks t shirts and underwear, I can understand that trying to mix when there's not a lot of water in is more of a strain on motor but it did fine last time.

Can anyone suggest why it would do this ? Is there a gearbox that needs oil or anything needing oiling or greasing ? I've no knowledge of these machines ?

The machine hasn't had a lot of use recently so maybe stiff ?

Richard is there a motor relay that maybe faulty. This may be a possible reason ???

These models had a capacitor rather than the relay found in the earlier machines (pre 1980 ish from memory of reading the service info) but it's indeed a possible point to check.

You can disable the agitated fill by moving some wires around on the timer. It's programmed to agitate during fill for 7 seconds in every minute on programmes 4, 5 and 6 (which, incidentally, is what it will do throughout any period of agitation if you press Gentle Action), thereby mixing the water to help the Temperature Sensed Fill feature gauge which valve to open.

If you don't fancy messing about with wires you could start it on number 7 which has no agitated fill, stopping and resetting the dial once it's filled, perhaps during the first pause/heat period.

The final batch of machines were produced with the agitated fill disabled, probably because it caused problems.

Hi Richard, yes could be the capacitor as Alex mentioned which is on the tub base stand midway left, check that and is the pump & wig wag running smooth and free ? other check could be the clutch shoes sticking either need a clean or change which isnt a big job. The gearbox is usually bombproof unless the seal goes...

definitely suspect the capacitor if its leaking it will cause this problem

Hi Richard

I can send you the service manual if you want as it describes how to modify the wiring to disable the agitating fill. I haven't used my 9605 for a while but it does sound like the capacitor could the the cause as others have pointed out. On the relay versions you get a brief different noise from the motor as it kicks in so it is probably the same with the newer versions and if the capacitor is failing it might linger in getting the motor started.
