Hotpoint dishwasher update

Hello, so after receiving a few parts I attempted to make this work. I got the matching water tower to the Whirlpool upper wash arm, like I said before I wanted to place it in the rack right over the extending spray jet from the lower wash tower, as I removed the third spray jet from the assembly that sprays the top rack which I don't believe to work very well.

Anyway, I installed the tower directly over that area and tested it after making a few height modifications to the tower. It was not a success. The upper wash arm receives water and pushes out a little water, but not enough to reach the dishes of the top rack. The issue is that the lower spray arm doesn't have enough pressure to activate that wash arm, as its not designed to. But whatever I guess, it was worth a shot. Anyone have any good recommendations on a good, used dishwasher brand for when this thing is on its last leg? I'm definitely hooked on getting an older style Whirlpool with the power clean wash system.

Also, anyone know how the rinse aid dispenser works on this older style GE dishwasher? I over filled it today and a little leaked out under the door but I feel like it doesn't dispense anything when its supposed to.

In the Whirlpool machines the lower arm sprays up thru a rubber spacer that's on it directly into that tower before it reaches the upper arm.

I know the GE has that telescoping center. Did you try removing the pieces that telescope to see if that affects the water pressure in any way? I know you have to leave the bottom part of the telescope there cause that is what anchors the lower wash arm. I'm referring to the inner pieces only.

WP machines have a rubber seal between the pump module and the tower, I bet what's left of the PowerTower isn't sealing well enough to keep the volume of water moving properly at a good pressure.

If I had to guess...

The telescoping tower of the GE will leak a lot of water out of itself until it is fully extended and the way you have it set up, it will stop short of that action so you are losing a large portion of the water volume that is needed to turn the upper arm.
Remember, the Whirlpool pump moves much more water than the GE pump and that rubber bellows does create a good seal on the tower so there is a good deal of water moving up to that upper arm. If you could see it in action with a clear panel in place of the door, you will be surprised by all the water and you will also realize how little the GE will move in comparison. The GE system works well when it does what it was designed to do.That pop up tower can do a good job of cleaning in those machines. If it was a poor performer, I am sure it would not have lasted so long in production.

I agree, placing a plastic panel on the machine will show you exactly what is happening, not to mention, as its original design, that tower shower can throw some water.....

not that we haven't done our own share of swap outs or changes.....

I liked the SmartWash design with the little whirly bird wash arms....

and a few modifications to the tower shower just to see cause and effect...drilling a few extra holes, or adding more slots near the top...some good, some not so good....

grab a few towers, and try a few changes....

this is located in Lansing....its a brand new Maytag from 1978. still in the box....at a price of 65.00.....by the looks of it, it appears to be a Revers-a-rack...

how can you go wrong?.....you would be a fool not to grab it......

check your local Craigslist, there are UltraWash/PowerClean models all around you....

like this one which is a convertible unit.......I have two of this exact machine....nothing you can't throw at them that they can't handle.....even a frosted chocolate cake!

I really do need a new dishwasher, but Im looking for something that definitely has an upper wash arm. I dont want a portable, its more work than Im willing to convert it into a built in model. Im looking for a newer model, perhaps something around the age of this.

you could try putting some old GE Triton parts in there?
That system worked well.

While you'd only need the tower, maybe you can ditch the stainless arm as well, and have the whole Triton distribution system?

Upper wash arm for a hot point dishwasher

Hi Daniel glad you got the arm installed, but I was suspicious that it would ever work because a GE/hot point dishwasher only has about half the water pressure of a whirlpool or KitchenAid style dishwasher.

 

A GE hot point dishwasher does move as much water as a Whirlpool or KitchenAid easily but it has only a 1/6 hp motor.

 

Even if it worked the holes are too small in the Whirlpool washer arms and would clog with stuff because there's no filter in a GE dishwasher.

 

Your best bet would certainly be a Whirlpool power clean dishwasher, you'll never look back there was never a dishwasher that performed better overall than the WP power cleans, I even gave up on my KDSS 20 KitchenAid dishwasher.

Ive given up. The motor is acutallly starting to make some very strange sounds and Its just time for a new one. So I have been looking on Craigslist and I found this one. Its not a power clean model, but its the model directly after they came out with the power clean. Its a Whirlpool, and has only a little rust at the bottom of the tub. They are selling it for 75$. Is this dishwasher a good model for weekly use?

A neighbor of mine has this same dishwasher, identically. And Ive used it before and heard it run and it cleans very well and is pretty quiet as far as I know. But is this dishwasher worth getting?

Hi Daniel, that WP DW is a power clean machine and is a great DW, what ever stain you see in the bottom is not rust from part of the DW, it could be something fell in the bottom and rusted or they had rust in the water supply, in any event it should clean up easily.

Rust, what was I thinking? I meant some sort of stain. Anyway, hopefully I will be picking this up within a week and get it installed!! Hopefully it will be a good dishwasher but I've nevertheless heard one complaint about this model. What year is this dishwasher anyway??

Power Clean

Go for it! As John said you will never go back to another machine. These hands down outperformed almost every other machine ever made. You can truly load un-rinsed and dried on with everything coming out spotless.

Let me know when you pull out that Hotpoint btw.

New dishwasher is here

So we did get a new dishwasher, and its very similar in a way to that WP power clean that I talked about buying, its a newer Maytag tall tub Jetclean dishwasher. Stainless steel inside and out, and is in great condition. We haven't gotten to pulling out the Hotpoint yet, hopefully this weekend because it is starting to make some concerning sounds from underneath. It wont be easy to say goodbye to the dishwasher I grew up around and love, but it has come to that time. Hopefully it can go to someone that needs it for parts, or wants to fix it up. I do not think that is is trash by any means. It has been a reliable machine for over 25 years!
