Hotpoint have had to re-call thousands of 18 series washing machines due to metal fatigue on the rear backplate, several customers have suffered serious injuries due do to pieces of metal ending up in their clothes. Mrs Scragg from Droylsden said she was horrified to find out that the rash between her legs, was not due to her husbands personal hygene habits but was caused by tiny bits of metal from the back plate getting impregnated into the material of her re-inforced gusset

Hotpint Service Department were unable to comment, they have however sent out a service bulletin and a pack of liquid metal to engineers showing pictures of the backplates and how to repair them, We spoke to a Hotpoint engineer a Mr Shark (who also told us he designed the De-havilland Comet airliner)said this sort of thing can happen but the public should not worry

Bloody hilarious! Mrs Scragg, and Mr Shark..sounds like a script out of the goons or the goodies.

I think it was Mr Shark who designed a dodgy aircraft for Dehavilland , I remember seeing a documentry some years ago, apparantly he was trying to lighten the aircraft further so made the alloy for the skin of the aircraft about half of the normal thickness, I seem to remember one of the factory workers commenting on how they had to stretch the sheets to keep the whole lot together , they compared it to 'tin foil'.
What idiot employed him at Hotpoint after that fiasco? They both need taking round the back for a kicking! How the hell did this fool get his engineering degree????

I have been told by an engineer that this is not a new problem, it been going on for years on the old alloy back plates of 18 series machines, especial in hard water areas, he says that’s why you will probably only fined some surviving in soft water areas today!!

Shocking photos, just think of that flying apart at 800rpm of faster!!!

Metal fatigue

Well i was shocked to find that was the reason for the leak on this machine...........i thought it was the pump.

IT is the worst i have ever seen............but Mr Liquid metal to the rescue (until another backplate comes along)

The first picture is what i initially saw, a bad attempt to repair this with i think araldite

Mr Metal

After i had gotten the glue and tons of dried washing powder out of the holes i cleaned them and filled them with liquid metal, that should sort it out.

This is a soft water area so it is surprising to see this, but these machines might have moved here with their owner from a hard water area (Droylesdon ?)...........
When I lived in London kettles etc became fosselised within a year........but down here nothing

yerr thas it..........ah well if not the water then maybe its.....its.........dare i say it..............Hotpoints Sh.t qaulity control LOL *grin*.......:-)

I dont mind i suppose it is a different fault compared to the usual faults i come across........plus i like the machine so it is no problem

HArd water

To be honest i do not know why hard water will cause this........i have seen it on other backplates (not as bad).......i think it is more to do with the washing powder, aluminium and surfactants i think dont mix well......i remember trying to clean my bike engine with alloy casings with ariel yrs ago and they went dark and stained.......bad mistake

Will keep an eye out on our trawls for a replacement one for you.

Cant wait for to see some piccies of your matched set lineup. I still reckon that the 17450 came from the same property as your 18370. Visual condition is just too similar and them both turning up at the same tip, withing weeks of one another.
We shall never know for sure, but its nice how you managed to save them both.

Myself and Rob now have ourselves an 18371, after our long trip 'darn sarth' at the weekend. Will get some pics this weekend.
Hopefully the backplate wont look like your 18370s, however . Rob does report that there appear to be scorch marks on its module!
Wonder what is better - structural defect or electrical defect? Think you maybe got the better end of the stick, this time round Gary.

Ariel 'Actilift'

I saw the new advert the other night on one of the UKTV satellite channels ('GOLD' or 'Watch').

Same style of short advert: shows the bottle sitting on a surface, Samantha Bond voice-over goes on about it being even more "brrrilliant", or words to that effect.

Forgot to say, both normal work on an exchange basis, send the faulty one and they send you a repaired one, or you can pay extra and keep faulty unit.
