As long as it fit on the timer shaft, all it had to do was turn far enough to the right to turn it on. The original knob probably got broken.

The DW looks to be in great condition, the price is pretty close to what the are worth if the stove is also in great condition.

Be sure and check the oven floor. This model used the hidden bake element.
Note that the dishwasher uses the original design of having the top rack sit on the side frame of the bottom rack. These are probably from around 1950, give or take a year.
