Morning All,

Just a quick question of curiousity, does anyone know how the “powder” clutch on the spinner worked on the 1965 Hotpoint Supermatic ?

Powder Clutch

The only person I know of thats worked on a Powder Clutch unit is Darren with his English Electric Liberator twintub. Am sure he will come along and add input when he can.

Are you washer teasing us with one you have found that needs repairing Keith ?

Clutch mechanism

The spinner motor and clutch are all in one unit with the clutch above the motor rotor . The rotor spins at the same speed from the start unlike the earlier 1400 machine . The 1420 allows the spinner to empty the water and once the the load starts to move and gather speed the powder in the clutch unit is distributed to the side of the clutch disc and then tightens against the clutch yolk .... and the spin can gets faster as the friction and resistance increases between the two components ...clear as mud !!!!!
I never want to work on another one of these again as they are so fiddly !!! Clever design but not very robust !! Darren
