Picked up one of these at the weekend, wasn't really looking for another classic machine but was just looking through the local classifieds when this popped up being sold by an old lady going into a nursing home, once I had seen it I had to have it! Tried it out yesterday and all seems to work ok, the only problem is that it seems to dribble water from the outlet pipe at certain times during the wash, any ideas what could be causing this? The pipe was higher than the recomended level so it can't be a syphoning issue. Will get some pictures on here at some point but for info its was purchased in 1993 and is the biscuit colour. It has all its manuals and invoices for repairs with it, had a new clutch in 1998. The only thing missing is the work top which the seller thinks was thrown away by mistake in the last few days!

Don't worry, it's normal

I've encountered restored and well used Hotpoint top loaders and they all dribble a bit of water from the drain hose during agitation. It's due to a valve in the pump: during agitation the pump runs one way and it closes some sort of flap valve. Of course, it's not a 100% seal so you get a little leakage. Only if the valve becomes very worn will it let enough water through to be a problem (e.g. a long wash cycle will lead to the machine topping up with water).

The pump runs the other way during drain and spin (as does the motor) and the valve opens accordingly - not sure if it closes off the recirculation port in the pump - someone else may well know more.

Just part of the classic characteristics of the design.

Enjoy using it - I'd love one! And in almond too...just a shade rarer.

I agree with your findings totally, both Hotpoint toploaders I have dabbled with have done the same whilst on wash, I once stripped the valve down to see if anything was wrong but could find nothing.
So as you say it part of the charms of these great machines

Thanks. If it's normal I won't worry about it. It went through the wash cyle without any problems so as you say it dosent seem to bother it.

As others have said, this is normal for Hotpoint toploaders. The pump runs all the time the motor is running and the diverter valve is pushed to close one port or another depending on the direction the motor is running. The valve is pushed by the two impellers on the pump, so it never actually closes fully at all! Therefore dribbling is the order of the day. With a new pump this isn't noticeable, but once some little bits of lint or scale get in there, the dribbling starts! I put a new pump on the 9605 about three months ago and within a few weeks it dribbled - nothing to worry about, even on the longest wash cycle it won't make a dent in the 69 litres in the tub.

The dribbling does happen during the spin cycle too - out of the filter-clean nozzle, so if you find the occasional slightly damper spot on your spun clothes that is why. It is highly unlikely to get so serious that you would notice during washing or spinning, the pump seal is more likely to fail well before that point. Changing the pump is very straightforward, and worth doing if it needs it. As it is always running, the do go relatively quickly. Have you had a look inside the cabinet to see if it leaking?
