Well to give the quartz machines a bit of a rest and following on from the London wash in at Al's earlier this month where i enjoyed seeing his machine in action I picked up 2 Hotpoint Supermatics from the same bloke I got my Hoovermatic T5024. Well they were only £12.50.
The 9404 had the back panel removed and on inspection the wash pump had been removed. Also there was lots of oil and grease inside and the wash side is very noisy. I've sourced a second hand pump and am hoping the gearbox only needs some oil and this machine will be back up and running
I will have to sell this one as the shed is going to collapse and with moving its just a bit too crazy having all these machines. I removed the heater control before this picture was taken .....
This one was leaking from its carbon seal but as I'd replaced these on the top loader it was a case of whipping off the drive nut on both machines and switching it which solved the problem.
I then took it for a test drive in the kitchen to do some laundry. All went well until I put the heater on and it old not switch off. The microswitch had fused together hence the strip down of the other machine
That revealed a weakness with these machines in that you can't drain the tub like you can in the Hoover (by lowering the drain hose) without the wash pump running. Anyway, I got I up and running again and was making good progress until the electric kept tripping. A screw holding the wash deck on was missing and this was dripping water onto the motor coils which in turn stopped the spin motor from starting once I dried the inside enough to keep the electric on. Happy to report that it is now all sorted out.
Here it is all up and running and ready for a good clean. Will have to get round to doing some videos next time it is out of the shed
Thanks Craig. I've had great fun washing with this twinny which is down in the kitchen so I've been using it for the last few weeks.
Anyway before I got stuck into the Quartz issues, I decided to drag the 9404 out of the shed seeing as I'd sourced a second hand wash pump. However, on close inspection I think I need to look at the wash gearbox before I add oil as there is quite a bit of play in the drive shaft. Are the gearboxes sealed units or can you take them apart like you can on the top loaders? I have a service manual for the machine as a whole but it looks quite time consuming to take is out as you have to take the cabinet off so I gave up.
I'm sure one will turn up soon for you Craig. They seem to be popping up everywhere. I need to calm down with my collection as I have 5 - 3 Hoovermatic's and 2 Hotpoint's. Mind you only one of each variety is actually fully functioning properly. Will get round to sorting the others out soon
