I have a top loader Hotpoint washer. It started what sounded like it was spinning
faster than it should and was loud sounded like a jet. There was no clanking likeit was unbalanced just loud.finally
it quit spinning altogether. The last time it spun it didn't get the clothes completely spun out. Any ideas what the problem could be. Bad motor maybe?

Re:#2

Over 80 years ago is 1943. I don’t believe that Hotpoint made an automatic washer anytime prior to 1947, but they did make wringer washers 80 years ago.

probably junk.... but....

bad bearings-can be fixed, but repair quite involved and stubborn, corroded parts likely will be encountered...Mid-1990s design made by GE,not best rep around here but better than most new washers you will find today...R.I.P.

Re

Wished there was a way to tell which part exactly is bad. As it stands could be motor, inverter, or transmission which includes bearing like someone has said it could be.

model design

Does this washer have a white plastic basket that is smooth inside or is it plastic with deep ribs or stainless steel?-those later two might be Hydrowave style with Inverter driven motor that could overspeed and be faulty.Does this washer have a fancy electronic control panel?

Re

No electronic control panel but from repair instruction sheet and research I think it has inverter on motor. Can inverter be replaced seperately or do you have to replace whole motor Here is a pic of basket.

Highpoint automatic washer Noise during spin

If the washer washes OK, it is not a bad motor, the main bearings are probably going bad along with the water seal which allowed water to get in and ruin the bearings.

This is a fairly major repair and not an easy machine to take apart for major repairs, but it is possible, depending on your ability.

Reply number five hi Eddie Highpoint has sold washing machines that spin clothing for over 80 years. They used to have twin tub machines 80 years ago.

Looks like a Hydrowave-that model does indeed have inverter built into motor.I have GE version of this washer-I will check if basket turns freely when machine is off(i think it does) Changing the motor should be easy if it is the cause of the trouble.

Re

My basketturns freely. If the watersealed leaked wouldn't there have been water underneath machine when I moved it?

Not necessarily, it only takes a tiny amount of water getting into the bearings, a couple times to ruin them.

In a nutshell if you put the machine into a fast spin cycle with nothing in it and it sounds like a freight train. The bearings are toast. This has nothing to do with the motor or the inverter.
