Looking at buying the cheapo hotpoint HPS15BTHRBB from sears... with price match from homo depot and discounts/coupons i can get it for $349 to $360 bucks..... Delivered and installed... But i need an icemaker... how hard are they to put in?

I am buying this because i don't trust my Samsung French door, the compressor sounds wierd, but maybe its me.. I don't need the freezer space anyway.. But i do need extra ice

I think sears may install it free with the delivery but just in case.... Does around $80 sound right? Seems expensive for that kinda thing

Most ice makers just basically plug in to the connections in the fridge.  Pretty simple, I'd guess 10 minute job.

Most of the Frigidaire and Whirlpool top mount fridges at Lowes come with a free ice maker, factor that into your cost.

Installing An Ice-Maker In A Refrigerator Equipped For One

Usually takes an experienced tech 20-30 minutes IF he does it correctly.

For someone that has not done it before allow an hour.

When doing an IM installation everything needs to be done perfectly including the water line to the ref, follow all instructions to the letter.

Most problems we see with IMs are because of sloppy and incorrect installations [ to say nothing of leaks and floods and property damage ].

$80 dollars is not a bad price, but unfortunately most Sears techs won't do it correctly, but it may still better than doing it yourself is you are not very mechanical or not good at plumbing.

I may be alone in this...

and prob. should keep my mouth shut, but--I can always find a few spare minutes to fill a load of ice trays by hand thus totally avoiding leaks, dicey wiring, mechanical hassles, etc. Ok…I'm ducking into a corner now :D

I would use ice cube trays, but my arthritis is bad enough that trying to undo them and carry them is a pain

I may actually just break down and buy an ice maker with a filter.. We use so much ice in this house between 3 people and a cat.. (Yes, our cat requires fresh ice with his water bowl changes ever few hours when hes inside)

I wish you could get a cheapo 10 cu ft refrigerator only, but the cheapest i found was $600

Refrigerators that take ice maker kits are prewired for it.  Instructions are included with the kit.  I've done a few, have another to do soon.  Involves installing the water valve at the designated location behind the lower rear panel, running the water feed line along the back up to the freezer, and the ice maker unit inside the freezer.  And, of course, connecting a supply line (not included) to the household tap ... which involves some plumbing work if there isn't already a tap behind the refrigerator.
