How many Canadians does it take to unscrew a lightbulb?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

I'd make a bad Simpsons joke about unscrewing it the other way in Canada, but that only applies to Australia!

Some sort of lube sprayed around the socked? PAM or something cooking friendly?

I sort of got pissed at the posting at first...

Being half or more from Canadian heritage (Dad was born in Moncton NB) I thought that was a mean post at first and then I read it and saw it was being funny from one of our good neighbors. Honestly, there are times nobody from any country can get one of those stupid things out other than breaking it and using pliers to force either the bulb or the whole unit out and then have to replace the whole thing...you know, the guy thing, break it and make it cost more.

Tim's right.  The bulb could very likely break in the process of trying to extract it.

Considering this, I'm reminded of the recent thread started by Lawrence/Maytagbear regarding stupid things we've all done in the past.  I presume the light automatically comes on when the door is open.  Be sure to cut power to the oven before you pursue this.

If the light bulb does break here's a good tip, I've used it before and it really works.

First of all wear safety glasses in case the bulb does break. If it breaks and all that is left is the element inside you can cut a potato in half and jam it on the remains of the bulb using a good amount of pressure. You can then turn the potato and the bulb will easily unscrew from the base.

We had a similar problem when ours burned out, but instead of being completely stuck, it promptly twisted the glass off of the metal base. Our light doesnt turn on when the door is opened, so I managed to twist/ extract the base with a thin pair of pliers.

Last Resort

Did you try it with the oven warmed up? Heat may help (wear gloves of course!).

If ultimately you can't get it loose, break it. Then with the power off and using a couple pairs of needle nose pliers you can grab the edges of the base and try to twist it out. If it is really seized you may have to rip the base of the bulb apart bit by bit. Usually they are aluminium and come apart easily.

Years ago I managed a pool hall where we had over 240 100w incandescent bulbs over the tables. We had a number of the bulbs seize in their sockets and many had to be removed bit by bit. A very thin wipe of silicon grease on the new bulbs base will eliminate the problem in the future!

Good Luck,

Phil

Thanks for the tips all. Must remember to unplug the thing. Stupid me wasn't even thinking about the power being on when the door was open on this stove..

Lawrence, don't want a new stove. I got this as the Habitat restore to replace the KA we left in Calgary that I liked so much because it has the probe and convection.

Tim..You know if your dad was a Canadian citizen at the time of your birth I think you're entitled to Canadian citizenship under what's called the "citizenship by descent" category. Only applies to the first generation born outside the country.

Proceed With Caution

How many flies does it take to screw in a light bulb? Only two but how do they get in there?

Just bragging here but I'll bet I have cleaned more ovens in my life than anyone on the sight. The stuck light bulb is more prevalent on self clean models but can happen to any oven light. Best think to use are rubber gloves. Grasp the bulb firmly with your fingers pointed toward the socket. A few tugs, a few back and forths and most often they release. In cases where I've twisted the glass off in my hand and left the socket I use needle nose pliers and unravel the aluminum socket, twisting out the lower threads. I have no idea if it has a speck of truth in it but my grandpa always told us to run the threads of the light bulb on the sides of your nose before inserting. He said there is enough oil on the skin to prevent the bulb from sticking.

Some experts recommend pressing a potato into the socker and trying to turn the threaded portion out of the socket. This may work on a broken light bulb but has little imnpact on one that is stuck by heat fusion.

There is something quite elegant about a lighted oven.

Pete, I do know my grandfather never became a US citizen, he stayed a Canadian and eventually moved back. My father was born when his family was in Salisbury NB taking care of a dying relative, even though they lived in Maine and my grandmother was a US citizen. My father always thought he was an American until one day US Immigration knocked on the door and scared my poor mother to death. They informed my father that he had to immediately become naturalized or be deported. I dont think I could qualify for the citizenship by descent because my father did become a US citizen.

I know Lawrence :) All I worry about with this stove which hasn't happened yet but did with the one in Calgary (which btw was a slightly newer model) is that one of the LED segments on the temp/clock display will fail making it hard to distinguish things like a 6 or 8 etc. So far so good because it's annoying when it happens and expensive if you can even get it replaced now, probably as much as replacing the thing LOL.

Tim, as far as the official website says so long as your dad was a Canadian citizen at the time of your birth,, if you could prove it with say his birth certificate or some other way that's all that matters. Here's the link, scroll down to item 9

Thanks Pete, that link was very interesting to be able to get any question you might have answered. But my father was naturalized American citizen about 5 years before I was born. But my brother was born before all the s... hit the fan and Dad was threatened to be deported for something he had absolutely no idea about and never could have changed. He always thought he was an American citizen because the only place he knew of home was Bangor, Maine. I will have to tell my brother about this , as he is seriously looking at a place on Campobello Island for a permanent residence.

If he never legally renounced being a Canadian to the Cdn govt he would still be considered a Canadian at the time you were born I think. The act of becoming a naturalized US citizen shouldn't matter since Canadians can hold dual citizenship. Something worth asking about anyways.
