With all the discussions about liquids, tablets, gels, powders and concentrated powders, I thought it would be interesting to know how much we all use to get the results that we are happy with....

So here we go:

...Life is about to get interesting now that we are all about to go to 2x concentrations. I find it just a tad freaky how Levers and Colgate Palmolive/ P&G have managed to co-ordinate this as they will both be out within weeks of each other...

It will be interesting to see what size scoop they put in the box and if indeed it is half the size of the current one. As Nathan mentioned in another post, Levers products use a 120ml (4oz) scoop. The interesting thing here is that we have no graduated additional dosages for hard water. The packages assume soft water...and say to add a 1/2 scoop for larger loads or hard water...

No dosage is given on the packs for a part load....

Can someone define a 'larger load'? Is it a capacity wash in a small machine or is it a capacity wash in a large machine. With front load machines in this country it can be a difference between 5kg and 10kg depending on brand.

We have at least one powder here that is already (virtually) 2x concentrate - Biozet...which is a Japanese brand (KAO) made in China....75ml (2 1/2 oz) normal dose for a TOP LOAD machine and 1/3-1/2 that for a front load machine - It works a treat and rinses quite well too...

So how much do I use?

I find that I get perfect results with 2/3 of a scoop of pretty much any powder...if the washing is of 'normal' soiling.

This is not rocket science but still kinda interesting in a marketing way...The average load of washing in this country is 4.5kg or about 2/3 the capacity of a standard 6.5-7kg front load machine and is probably what I wash as I avoid 'capacity' washes if I can.

The equivilent powder in the UK - Persil - gives a soft water dosage of 80ml or about 2 1/2 oz...for a 4-5kg load.

I used to work with a lady who had a Neptune front load machine...her clothes always reeked of OMOMATIC and fabric conditioner...one day laundry came up and I discovered that she was using a minimum 2 scoops and sometimes 3 (12oz) of concentrated powder in addition to 'filling' the conditioner dispenser to the brim...I suggested that she reduce the detergent load to half what she was using for a couple of weeks and cut down on the conditioner by half too....and see if she was happy.

To say that she was amazed that she got the same results was an understatment...

So there we go.....How much do you use?

I only use liquid in the Affinity. I don't think I've ever gone higher than line 2 on the measurements inside the cap. How many ml that is I don't know. Mostly I use Tide but with whatever brand, line 3 is the highest and I've never used that much. I would probably use more on badly soiled loads if I thought the Affinity could provide adequate rinsing. So no more than 2/3 of a full dose, I guess.

I never use fabric softener anymore. I think I read here that it's not the best thing for a front-loader.

I dose the detergent very generously but I always measure.
The liquids I use at the moment would only require 75 ml for medium water conditions and normal soiling.
Found 125 ml work best in the long run, but I cut back on partial loads. The water is pretty hard in Munich and I hate sratchy limescale build up on fabrics.
I use only half the recommended dose of fabric softener for a full load.

If you

drop a glass of water in Munich, it is 50/50 that the water will break before the glass does.

I dose for the hardest water and whatever degree of 'Schmutzigkeit' my clothes have.

Works fine.

In Europe, they list exact dosage of detergent for water hardness and dirtiness of the clothes.

Commercial laundry products in Europe, the UK dose mainly by lbs/kgs weight of soiled laundry (or capacity of the washing machine), then by hardness of water.

American commercial laundry products tend to dose by weight of soiled laundry, and or machine capacity, without regard for water hardness, but will advise to increase or decrease dosage to suit water conditions.

Find it tis best to dose by weight of load, and adjust upwards or down based upon soil levels and if one is adding extra boosters such as STPP, borax, oxgen bleaches, and so forth.

5kg of badly soiled towels are going to require a different wash formula than an equal amount of lightly or normally soiled bed linen.

Best indicator are results. If one's whites and brights are gleaming, stains removed, colours not fading, darks not fading, then one knows whatever one is doing is working. OTHO, if a load emerges from the washer with stains and soils that should have shifted without allot of pre-treating, then one may have to reconsider the wash formula.

In general find one to two tablespoons of any European "mega-perls" type detergent plenty, esepcially when adding STPP and or extra oxygen bleach.

Hey Chris
I tend to use the recommended on the packaging, I was at my local Woolworths today and look what I found in the detergent isle, some of the 2xUltra was out. I purchased what was available just to have a sneak peak use what i can once or twice then give away as I am not a fan of it

Here is a picture of the liquid in a macchiato glass, as you can see it is still the same as it was in previous versions much to my disappointment. Also it states nothing on the pack about Enzymes or really any detailed info as to what ingredients it contains. It says
"Ingrdients: this pack contains ingredients which remove dirt from clothes, soften water, disperse soils, brighten and perfume fabrics"
And also a soop of the Spree next to Omo Frontloader and as you can see it is very tiny.

Jim...

Please let us know what you think...

As I mentioned above, Biozet is pretty much close to where we are headed (75ml v 120ml)....

Was the scent on the spree stronger than the old version?

I just had a thought that we may be about to get overwhelmed with scents as if you use less, there is less of the product to have scent to give your clothes....

my doses

Hi guys,
At the moment we are using Woolworths Select liquid with eucalyptus and it's recommended doses are 2 caps for a full load and an incredible 3 capfuls for a very large or heavily soiled load, now we very rarely reach the maximum capacity in the L.G. Turbodrum,(8.5kg.) maybe 6-7 at the most so I find 1.5 capfuls is sufficient,on occassions I have used 2 particularly on a load of underwear, towels and bed sheets which all can get a bit grotty and smelly but for everyday clothes 1.5 is plenty.
If I am using powder I tend to trust the scoop also 1 full to 1.5 in my opinion one would only use more if you were washing a full 8.5kg load.
In the twintub I use a bit less smaller washtub, smaller loads etc.
Don't use fabric softener at all, don't feel any need for it.
Cheers.
Steve.

Ok so I have done a few loads.. I first did a load of white bath towels with Spree, the towels actually came out nice and bright considering that Spree is normally such a crappy detergent. I noticed a few suds in the wash cycle but not a trace by the last rinse. Second load was coloured towels with the Dynamo again a few suds but rinsed well both left a nice scent but not overpowering. The Omo was by far the best as expected not a trace of suds in the wash you could hear the clothes sloshing around in the washer even through the wash cycle very good indeed. It still smells the same as previous version which I love and cleans just as great! I was a little disappointed that Colgate didn't change their liquids to a gel but will make a decision once I get my hands on a front loader version that I can use. The Cold Power did smell nice though, when I put it on my fingers it did not dry up and flake like previous version. And the 500gr packs of Fab in the Supermarket looked so cute!
