Hey guys I found this article on the net and thought you all might enjoy it. The best part is the phantom photo of Unimatic 1140's GE washer....enjoy......PAT COFFEY
what a brilliant little site, if my laptop didnt give me so much of a headache i would be looking through all the articles on there. amazing that flat screen tvs were around in the 40s and answering machines and fax machine were around in the late 20s and thirties.
sure is small. If this is a true representation, I never knew that the Bendix was so small. How much laundry did it hold, and, how heavy was the machine. I always assumed it would be a beast to lift one!
I would have made weekly payments on that GE for years!
The Bendix is a small package but they claimed it could wash nine pounds of clothes. I tried to cram nine pounds in mine and it was so stuffed, the clothes didn't really "tumble" they just rolled as a ball. The drum is tiny so for even mediocre cleaning results, 1/2 full was about the limit. Using real soap, I can't imagine the horrors that people opened the door to after the poor washing and pitiful rinsing and 200 rpm spin. It's not a fluke that we find so many barely used still bolted to their concrete slabs.
