Technically speaking, pure citric acid does not contain salts.

However, it can chelate metal ions and in this way acts as a water softener. When it does this, it does not precipitate as readily as washing soda, but more readily than STPP.

White Whites

a long 60*c wash in a european front loader using an oxygen based bleaching agent detergent such as Ariel or Persil Biological powder or Tablets

or you can use a Liquid detergent plus a scoop of oxygen powdered bleach to give the liquid an extra kick

or a half a cup of bicabonate of soda to the detergent, known for its whitening properties

this past weekend we washed our white sheets as follows:

Turned the hot water tank up to about 165.
Washed sheets in hot water with FOCA and STPP.
Rinsed sheets in warm water with Clorox bleach.
Rinsed sheets again with 1 cup vinegar in the warm water.
Final rinse was in warm water.

We then dried the sheets in the dryer. When they were done, they had no smell to them whatsoever. All you could smell was the clean fabric. I assume we santized the heck out of them.
They were very soft as well.
And shall I say they were VERY white!
