Just acquired this 40 inch FLAIR Imperial this week... He was taking the glass off.. I mean putting it back.... so he could access the burner switch. Front burner wont go off. He had the defective switch removed and glass panel all cleaned. He is still berating his self..... He said he should have put on "just one knob" would have held the glass in place"....
He had to struggle to get it up incline of an underground garage in Louisville.
Now how hard would it be to find.....????
If not maybe we can have a template/ Maybe get glass drilled ????
I asked him to save the large pieces for now to write down what is what... would plexiglass work???
Okay where to find the defective front burner switch?? and perhaps the glass top cover with all the writing???
can thi switch be exchanged for one that wont go bad as easily? you know by pass something????
see something similar on Ebay.. but number differnt..
our switch says on the side "style 75222262 model 70004" 7 1 65 I assume that is the date?
It looks like this Ebay one sort of cant see number on it or the other side of switch

Eeek!  I knew my ears were burning for a reason.... 

 

I can only think that finding a 'parts donor' Flair that's the same model as yours and harvesting the glass panel would be the way to go...  

 

As for replacing the burner switch, I'm not an expert (and I am sure someone with more experience and knowledge will chime in) it would depend on which burner it is.  If it's the 'Heat-Minder' unit,  it is possible to replace the switch with one of the regular infinite-heat ones - this was done on my '62 Flair and the only real "problem" with this is that the switch settings may no longer match the dial settings (as you saw with mine, 'warm' is 'hot'...)

 

If the burner is the Speed-Heat unit, there will be some creative wiring involved to replace the switch; you'll also have to replace the burner itself with a 236 volt unit or else it will burn out when used with a regular switch. 

From what I could see with mine, it looks as if the speed heat switch was completely disconnected from the 118 volt line (black wire), but I'd need to study that more to be sure of what had to be done.

What's the model number on your range? 

 

If the defective burner switch has never been replaced, It could be a RCI-645J? 

 

If you don't know the model number, look at those pictures from a 1965 model. The control panel glass was made that year only.

 

If it's different, you can post a picture of the control panel glass so we could identify it and we could keep an eye for one.

how do I "lift" the burners...?

You tubers says you just tilt up the four burners and clean them.... I tried liting or flipping up.. wont go.. DONOT force them up... You tube guy also said Fair model number inside behind the back left burner.... Here is a pic of the stove before we bought it week or so ago. The DA still has our stove on local CL... His ad said 1963.... I dont now I uploaded 3 pics but I only see one .........

That blue Flair badge should be on a 1960-61 model.

 

I have a later model with the black Flair badge but it still has the same control panel from 1960-61, mine is a Custom Imperial (RCIB-645) and I assume yours is too as there are no "Imperial" 40" models.   I included two pictures of the burners lifted up, the third picture shows the right rear burner lifted up and the location of the model number tag.

Yeah, Phil ours is the same model

Hubby fugured out how to raise the "burners" yesterday after I posted my thread....
He used the front right burner last nite, He said it immediately went to high...
Now he took out the front left "switch" cause it did not work first time he messed with the Flair when he plugged it in... ..........He wondered about the 3 yellow wires.... He just taped them together......
The back left burner LIght comes on... but nO HEAT...Right back burner works.....
So Phil what do we do ??? Do we buy off Ebay or what a new switch????
Anyone have for sale an owners manual specfic to our Model???/
I downloade one of the internet but it so much to print out.....
there is another Flair for sale 80 plus miles away.....

If you have a missing dial glass and two non-working burners, buying the other Flair if it's not too expensive and if you have a way to transport it!

The two front burners on the US-built Custom Imperial models have complicated controls. They can be substituted with regular parts and many have already been. Just post pictures of the model you have and the Flair you're looking at to be sure you won't get very different one or a post-1964 model with complicated oven controls.

Will the serial number help? How can I be sure that the parts of the one for sale will fit each other?
How can we substite with regular parts? how we go about it?

The one in the thumbnail is a RCIB-645 just like mine. If you get either this model or the RCIB-645-2, you'll see that many parts interchange.
