See the below-linked article from the Raleigh News&Observer.

I'm not quite grasping this...
This is reason enough for me to move back to Milwaukee... where, in my little suburb of Glendale... it was code to have a disposal installed!!

I don't see the point of the whole issue.
Am I missing something?

Good thing I'm in Durham.

"If you do support the troops, be willing to suck it up just a little bit."

What a hoot Fred. I love how the war on Terror has become the rubber stamp for every oddball measure passed by a measly City Council.

"If you support the troops.... be willing to [remove all civil liberties] just a little bit" ;-)

Ben

Well you ARE now in the south, after all.............LOL

OMG what nonsense. Sovereignty issues abound!

And relating this to the war? RUBBISH & DISGUISTING.

Dear, put a new one in today and use it to your heart's content.

FEH! of all the things in this country that are failing, this is the biggest non-issue I have ever seen!

New York City and Toronto were the only cities in all of North America to prohibit disposers. The fears associated with then were discovered to be unfounded.

Wait until there are insect and rodent problems from food in the trash in a warmer climate. That'll "learn" them!

Ugh somehow connecting garbage disposers and the Iraq war? Preposterous is the best adjective for the whole article, not to mention the new law.

HA HA HA - That council is so stupid. Hello, I could just go purchase a new disposer if my old one stopped working. Who the heck is going to know? Okay, so maybe I have to drive to the next town over and buy one - not such a big deterrent.

And, I fail to see where this relates to ANY war (unless we've developed some new weapon that needs disposer parts).

This is ridiculous.

It is ridiculous to discuss not having trash grinders as a way to support the US military.

If you want to say "Flushing your organic waste down the drain uses more water than we can afford given that we are in the worst drought in a century, that makes sense.

Personally, I loathe the things because they are always getting clogged up, and I am concerned about the water use (I live in Colorado) and stopping up my sewer line.

But not everyone feels that way.

Nate

No I could NEVER give up my disposer or disposer's I should say I have 11 of them.Nate I had the same problem with them.My lines got clogged over and over and it boils down to In-sink-erator.They make Kenmore,Maytag,Kitchenaid, and more.ISE machines are terrible all of them save the Evolution Excel Pro.The badgers,Kenmore,Maytag all have the same grind system in them.I have a Old Maytag when Maytag made them and I can put Paper, coffee Filters,Steakbones and it never clogs. The Vikings are made by I.S.E. but it has the Old Hobart grind system in it they make them to Vikings spec. There used to be alot of differnt manufacturers but now there is only Two and the ones that are out there today can't hold a candle to the machines from the 70s.Thats why I collect them cause the machines today Save the VIKING and I.s.e. Pro Excel will stop up your lines. This of course dont go for everybody but if you have alot of bends it will.

Banning disposers is ridiculous, it's organic food waste. What's next, everyone must dig a pit and build an outhouse? Relating this to the "war" (if one dares call it a war, I would imagine Iraqis refer to it more as a holocaust) is pathetic. Obviously someone is asking themselves "what would Dick Cheney say?"

Banning disposers is ridiculous

Next, I can see City Councils around the country banning automatic washers and dryers because they use too much energy or water... blah! I noticed that the only one (interviewed) that was supporting this ban was an evironmentalist.... that should say it right there! God save the White-breasted Beetle Pecker!

I got some of the scoop on the ban from a fellow that lives in Raleigh and works with me-he was commenting that the real thing for the ban was new EPA regulations for sewage treatment plants that have to handle the food waste-they have to upgrade their equipment to handle the added protein waste that disposers add to the waste stream. The sewage companies can no longer allow the protein waste thru untreated. So they have to uprgade or ban the disposers.I commented its WORSE having the food waste in the trash stream-because of pests and insects ,rats, such.I am for still having the disposers. Many other cities have UPGRADED their systems to handle the waste. Its time for Raleigh to do the same.I don't see the connection of disposers and the war.

The connection between

disposers and the war is the sort of cheap hooray! patriotism which Republicans and christianists have used, successfully, for years to justify every cut or shrinkage of civil and human rights in the US.
Most folks would consider such a prohibition stupid. Tell them that it is "for Jesus" or "to support the homeland" and the emotional and mental hurdle to jump over is much higher - most Americans are Christian and really patriotic. It takes reflection and personal honesty to tell the difference between supporting your religion and your country and being manipulated.
Personally, I find it despicable to use the death of over 4,000 young American soldiers, the emotional and health damage to hundreds of thousands more to justify such a thing.
Yet, I can assure you, my red-neck family members who hear of it will automatically support it. They'll think it's a good thing and be certain that anyone who questions it is a commi-pinko-fag-unchristian-hippie-democrat!
Just look at the way the Iraq war was sold to the American people, look at the fury true patriots faced when they dared to suggest the emperor had no clothes...especially way down South, much less in the Carolinas.

Me, I've never been that crazy about disposals one way or the other, but if I lived In NC, I'd now have one on both sides of the kitchen sink, the bathroom sink, the bathtub, shower and laundry room sink. With two or three extra for good measure.

I like the way you think!

Is a badger the cousin of the beaver?

~Sorry, 'bout that. OK, if I lived in Raleigh, I'd be on my back right now, sweating away at servicing all those Badgers.

Well I think it would be much more patriotic if you were servicing the soldiers.

This is for you PeteK (tongue in cheek-- no-no further north, dear....)
GOD BLESS AMERICA- (Because nobody else will).
