Hundreds of Old Motors

Just thought that you would want to see hundreds of motors on their way to China! I scrapped at least 500 motors earlier this year, saving only the Blackstone motors, as I am clearing out the store. My father bought and restored most of these motors. I tried to sell them, but without success, so they had to go the the junkyard. If you see a particular motor that you might have wanted, sorry, too late. Sure is a lot of manual labor involved here.

I'm working on a pile of scrap iron, soon to be larger than the pile of motors.

oodles of copper

Were you able to get a decent price for the scrap copper & metal or were you lucky to just have them hauled away?

Scrap metal prices are historically high, and have been for the past couple of years, thanks mostly to China. For the motors, I got 18 cents per pound. Insulated copper wire goes for close to a buck a pound, which is why I was cutting off all the wire. Before throwing away any appliance, I save all the wire. Clean copper, without insulation, is over $2 per pound. Scrap iron, however, is hardly worth the work of lugging it around--just a few cents a pound.

I sure would like to know how recyclers can separate the copper out of motors. In the past, I have cut the windings to get out the copper, but that is very time-consuming. There must be some heavy-duty shredder that can chop up the motor frame. Time to Google.

Yes-SSI shredders could chop up the motor frames-and you can seperate the copper from the iron more easily.I used to dismantle transformers from transmitters by hand-now its just not worth it-better to have the transformers rebuilt-then resell them or use them for spares.Go to the SSI website-and watch the film clip of their shredder chopping up a torpedo-if it could do that-I would think it could cut thru most motor frames.
