Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I believe you will....

....really like this machine.

Akronman said it right, it can handle anything. And every other positive comment on this thread, I know to be true. I wash pillows, thick king size mattress pads, large rugs - many items that other machines struggle with - the 1-18 takes it all in stride. The roll-over is superb, and actually seems better to me when using a bit less water. It really cleans, rinses and extracts water very well. One word of caution - you don't want to use a high sudsing detergent - as it will make a mountain of suds, then suds lock - not good. Not the quietest machine - but the agitation sound is like music to my ears.

Great find. Wish you the best!

One of my favorite 1 18 models.I had a few of them in my journies but still prefer the front loaders. Too much ware on the Trans and fabrics.

Frigidaire 1-18 Washers

These were one of my favorite washers and diffidently the best washer design to come out of the 1970s, in fact the design and engineering of these washers were at least TEN YEARS ahead of their time.

These washers work best if you do medium size loads and keep the water level on the small size load setting, when used this way they turn over clothing almost as well as a Uni-Matic does and the rinsing is better with a smaller load setting because the dirty wash and rinse water does not back-wash through the clothing as the machine is emptying. It is also important for good cleaning to keep the water level at the correct level, if too much water is used turnover and cleaning really suffer, when I saw a Frigidaire training video back in the 1970s when GM-F was selling these washers they showed how the clothing actually should come out of the water as they were turning over.

There were few weak areas in the design of this washer, GM-F had really beefed up this washer compared to the 1960s Roller-Matics, even failures of the water bellows almost never occurred on the 1-18s, probably the most serious problem [ that will eventually happen to any washer ] is when the main water seal fails and allows water into the bearings and mechanism. One of the most telling things about the durability of these great machines was in almost every case the washer would long outlive the matching dryer, which is usually the other way around for most brands.

I have had one as my daily driver for 20 years and intend to keep one in my home laundry. The one I have I fully insulated the inside of the washers cabinet with low pile carpeting so the noise level is really quite low.

Enjoy your new Washer, John.
