Sorry to hear this too. But it's happening all over the place. Here in Houston blow up decorations are being stolen along with Christmas lights right off the houses. Don't people have any decency left?
Here are some tips to follow to keep yourself safe.

1. Walk with confidence and be aware of your surroundings at all times. People who have this "look" are less likely to be assulted. If you feel you are being followed, immediately head to a well lighted area where there are lots of people. Report your "shadow" to the area police/security.

2. If possible visit malls with a freind or two. Groups of people are less likely to be assulted than a single shopper.

3. Don't keep valuables in site. If you are carrying a Ipod or such, keep it between your exterior clothing and your shirt. Wear a money belt, rather than a billfold. Only keep what credit cards you plan on using that day on your person.

4. Keep valuables in the trunk of your auto, not in the passenger cabin. Thieves cruise the parking lot looking in vehicles for things to steal. Don't make it easy for them.
When driving ALWAYS keep your doors locked.

5. If the worst thing happens, remember personal possesions are only material things and can be replaced. Your life cannot. Give the robber(s) what they want.

6. If it is a situation where you MUST fight back, here are a few tricks to use:

1. Act like you are going for your wallet, but instead bring your arm up behind you and jab the robber in the eye as hard as you can with your index finger. Use the momentum of movement to make the blow as forceful as you can. If they start to fall backwards a heavy kick to the stomach will bring them down. Or if they fall forward a nice hard knee to their face will end any agression on their part.

2. Same as above, but use your middle finger to target the area in the center of the throat just below the adams apple just above where the bones meet the neck. This will send the person down immediately by collapsing their airway. You needn't worry about them coming after you.

These two methods are VERY effective self defense tips. I hope you don't have to use them, but as thieves are getting more aggressive something has to be done!

The horror stories I'm hearing from Houston are far worse.

The first time I visited Boston, I was FLABBERGASTED at what a tough place it was (West Broadway absolutely reminded me of Brooklyn)....my little "New England Patriot" preconceptions shattered to bits...

I slowly began to get hip to the fact that my hometown didn't necessarily have the market cornered on urban terror....

And New York? All that glitters isn't gentrified gold, either...the cops have something called "Compstat", which is a different way of reporting crime stats. (That's a nice way of saying they tweaked the numbers, to make the burg more tourist- and business-friendly.)

I distribute food to the homeless, and get followed out and hassled more often...oh, not by the homeless themselves, but their neighbors, lol!

Maybe it's time for a gay planet?

Good advice Allen,

Tho' it might be noted that Nr.2 will probably solve the problem...indefinitely. Not that I see anything wrong with that - gay bashers don't deserve to live.
But it's only fair to mention.
Living here in Europe, where life is safe, I always feel hyper alert when in the 'States - try to dress and look all of my bulky 6'2".
Wish more of the bulk was muscle and less fat...
I wonder why folks tolerate so much violence in society. Somehow I don't think Constable Turnbull would be pleased to have heard that these kids had attacked our Johnathan.

You can take a girl out of the boroughs, but you can't t

I always heard to push their nose in and up with the palm of your hand.

Medium force: Broken nose and two black eyes. (easier to find them later).

Heavy force: Internal bleeding. Let's just say their mommas will be buying a black outfit for their funeral.

If you are attacked, you don't want to dance with your attacker, you want to take them out (disable them) as quickly as possible and plan your escape to safer territories.
And anyone is subject to be robbed, you'd be surprised who has been.
Toggles, another good tip for self defense.

Yes, Oxydolfan1, that's what I said. You do the crime, you do the time (perhaps with a few additional unexpected 'surprises'), and I've watched enough shows about it on the Discovery Channel to know that prison/juvie/jail/etc. is no cake walk, which, theoretically, SHOULD be enough of an incentive to prevent people from committing a crime in the first place, but apparently not. After what these punks did, I hope they get equal treatment in return, which they SO righteously deserve.

Apologies for yet another follow-up!

And Allen, I remember hearing about the Christmas thieves on the news. It's sad, really, how things have changed in recent years when you think about it. Even as little as 5-10 years ago this didn't happen. I'm just glad I live in a small town with a relatively low crime rate.

Stealing things..

Who on earth would want to ruin some ones nice christmas decorations and such..Have not yet herd of any one stealing these things here...

Although, I am very bad to leave my digital camera on the seat, my medications in open view in a ziplock baggie (some one would have a real party with them, though if they took the Xenical they would S*it alot and the Sinemet is for Restless Leg/Parkinsins (no i don't have that), and would pee alot (and have lower blood pressure) if they took the HCTZ, so who knows what they would do with them..
But i am sure they could make a good deal of meth from the Zyrtec D, they would be stoned off there butts with the Ultram (pain/arthrits med)..
Also am bad to leave money in the consoule, leave the face plate on the trucks cd player, leave the computer in sight, etc....Also used to leave the cars unlocked/keys in the ignition at home in the garage or carport, until the neighbors kids in my old subdivison started stealing cars... That put an end to that

ALthough i do keep my wallet in my front pocket, and my cell pgone, but thats more so cause i am forgetful...

I need to watch my p&qs...

Westytoploader....well, it must be interesting to openly advocate rape and torture in the midst of the Christmas season!

Then again, if I resembled a pint-sized Johnny Ramone, maybe I'd feel the same way....

I live in one of those small towns as well, but still...People will steal if desprate enough... We had some one break into our office one night, just to steal the Copier...Nothing else, just a Copier

You just cold-busted!

Well I guess they don't realize that service contracts are usually needed if you seriously intend to use one and that the machine has a trackable serial number.

I don't understand how now one saw them and or how they moved it..Guess they rolled it out? Dunno... They stole the copier from our office, a stamp machine and 2 2 line phones from the attorneys ofice down street, 2 old computers from another office, two desks from the goodwill and few other odds and ends from the clothing store and gas station...Some one must have been trying to start a busniess?

Makes no sense to me... Then again stealing makes no sense to me...If you can't afford it then you can't have it..

Stealing

In the small, eastern Kentucky town I live in, most all breakins, violence, and other crimes are related to drugs. We have one of the highest drug abuse rates in the whole nation! A few years ago, we hired a very reputable company to send a repair man to our house in order to repair the air conditioner. Oh, he repaired it alright! As I floated around our pool, content to enjoy the sun, this jerk stole an $18,000 gold and diamond bracelet, a $2,500 custom made gold and diamond necklace, several other gold items and a watch right out of my jewelry box. Turned his a** in real quick! He got caught, sent to prison and the company's insurance paid me for the losses. Still felt violated somehow and the jewelry was long gone. I learned fast, not to be so trusting! I hate stealing and lying the most!

Thats awful..

I have my great grandfathers Rolex Watch he got when he was a bank president... I can't wear it, because of skin allergeies to metal, but i keep it locked away so no one can steal it

Stealing

That's one thing I can't stand is a thief and have no tolerance at all for them and like Chad said if You can't afford you don't deserve it or need it until You can afford it. But now adays You have to have everything under lock and key no matter where your at. That's one thing My parents taught my 3 sisters and myself to never lie, cheat, or steal, they maybe dead and gone but will never be forgotten and I'm so blessed to have been raised the right way. It's a very true statement what goes around comes around.

Skip...

Tonight I was in a subway station rather near to the Queens Center shopping center, waiting for the train, when this clown plops himself down on the bench, opens his backpack, and begins neatly stacking about two dozen boxes of Calvin Klein underwear he'd obviously rooked, and proceeded to systematically unpack each pair of briefs, methodically removing the plastic fasteners, wrappings, etc.

He was down to his last pair by the time the train pulled in.

Guess momma's got some washing to do in the morning....

By the time the train got to Woodhaven Boulevard, and the next teenie-bop mall, the subway car was a zoo....but I found it pretty funny, for some reason....

The stores are REALLY not that crowded this year.

I take it he's gonna sell em.....Not wearem....On Ebay Keep an eye out for a special on Calvin Kline Undies

Unless he's that desprite for desginer brand undies? Hmmm... I would just go commando....

Mind you i like the nice 100% cotton boxers that are like $12.95 a pair, but i ain't going and stealin them... I just buy a few when i can afford it (or seem on sale at Kohls or Sears)

Everthing has to be kept under such lock and key is terriable.

Come on baby break a sweat and break a nail, you can do it!

~Makes no sense to me... Then again stealing makes no sense to me...If you can't afford it then you can't have it..

It is exactly the sense of entitlement when one chooses not to work for something that makes some people beyond contempt.
