The seller said that the drum locked up and wouldn’t spin, so he got the repairman to have a look at it but the repairman clearly never worked on a Maytag(also managed to ruin the tub ring clamp, but it might be ok I haven’t had a good look at it yet). He thought the tub bearing was the issue but I never have heard of a Maytags drum locking up because of the bearing, I’ve only ever heard of a Maytag locking up because of the brake not releasing.

Anyway, I has looking to see if anyone had a cheap nut and wrench so I could replace the broken one.

Oh and I did get the LAT9800.

Bad Top Spin Bearing

Hi, These can and do lock up if moisture gets in long enough and then the washer sits for a while.

The repair guy did not hurt anything, you have to break that corroded lock ring off anyway and a new one comes in the repair kit.

It also looks like the agitator shaft is likely in bad shape so you will need a transmission or a new transmission top and rebuild the rest as well.

I have never seen a MT brake lock up, it just does not happen, about the only way it might happen is if the machine sits in a foot of water for severals years but if that happens you will have greater problems that a bad brake.

Thought the brakes have locked up, I’ve heard people say that, maybe I just misunderstood what they were saying

Is it the transmission bearing or tub bearing?

I’m thinking of doing a not so refined repair on this machine, wonder if I could put some oil on the bearing to see if it will free up? Then just put a spare nut on? If so, what oil should I use? Just some WD-40? Just kidding.

I’ll try and refurbish the top of the transmission the best I can, I have the LAT 9800 that I could look at for reference, I’d assume they would look the same when the agitator is removed.

If the bearing is leaking (don’t think it is), I might replace it.

The machine overall in not the best shape, I will just wait until another pitman Maytag comes up and get that and make a working one out of the 2.

Turns out the transmission has been leaking oil, is there an easy way to fix it? Or is the transmission stuffed? I know that in the later models they had a replaceable seal but on my machine I don’t think it has one.

The tub also has a hole about 1 1/2 cm big any way to fix that?

I find the machine very interesting as the way it selects a cycle is very similar to an a900-906
