My duet obviously decided I was getting cocky and has started shredding in the last two loads.
The first was a full load of darks and it totally shredded the back of a dress made out of synthetic fabric. I’d assumed that I’d left a zip in zippered and just wrote it off.

Today I had a full load of white sheets and a sheet and a duvet cover have come out with blue marks and some cuts like they’ve been cut with a razor.

The paddles are smooth and not loose. When I look at the space between the drum and the boot, I can see some blue scrud, so I’m assuming stuff is getting in between the boot and the outer tub.

My question is, what would cause this to suddenly start happening? The only thought I’ve had, is that if the friction dampers are worn, maybe with a full load the drum is sitting lower than normal and that’s increasing the space between the boot and the outer tub. Does anyone else have any ideas?

If it was mine, I would check if there is anything sharp caught in the door seal. I guess worst case could be a broken spider arm.

Thanks Alexander. I did pull a friction damper yesterday and there is still a fair bit of resistance. I’m tempted to buy one new one and see how it feels compared to the originals. I’m used to the Miele ones having zero resistance when worn, but maybe these started out stiffer. It’s good to know that it does drop under heavy loads, that gives me somewhere to start.

I could fill it up with towels. Although they’re not thin/delicate enough to really get stuck in the boot. I’m reluctant to put sheets in again, I’ve sewn the tears up, but it’s $500 worth of bedding that it’s damaged.

Whirlpool German built front load washers

I have a KitchenAid proline washer in the outdoor laundry that has this German duets style mechanism in it, the shocks are going bad on mine, but I’ve not had any clothing damage. I’ve just had the tub crash into the glass a few times.

I will watch out when washing sheets and lighter fabrics Nathan something to keep an eye on. I’ve never really liked this machine because it tangles long sleeve shirts and pants so badly with the tilted tub, but I do like the cycling and the overall performance otherwise so I tend to wash huge loads of towels in it. Etc

Thanks John, I ordered one friction damper this morning, so I’ll see how it feels comparatively when it arrives. The idea of spending $240 on a machine this old isn’t a good one, but aside from the SQ, the LG wash tower is the only full sized machine left on the market here that isn’t a Samsung combo. Everything else fits in a 60x60-70cm square.
