even do its longterm planing what to chose my first choice of course is this kenmore dishwasher model harvest gold and portable of course or vintage portable kitchenaid dishwasher like this model my first choice of course would be the kenmore model why portble because i could use it as an extra work space?

I would go with the Kenmore first, no matter what others may say, I know it's a D&M design, but it is a true 2 level wash system that the Kitchenaid is not (1 wash arm on the bottom). You will be able to load more in the Kenmore than the Kitchenaid and it will come clean. I have the KitchenAid as a backup machine and do use it, but loading it can be a pain as all pots have to go in the top rack and it doesn't do a good job with them(the Soak Cycle is a joke and a waste of time), otherwise you lose the area in the top rack if you block the spray from the bottom. The Kenmore may not be built like a tank, but I think it will be fine. Sears sold a boat load of those machines.

Dream Dishwasher ?

I don't think it would be a D&M unless you are very handy fixing things and have lots of spare parts, even an unused portable D&M DW you would be very lucky to get a hundred loads washed without a fire or flood or just simple breakdowns.

 

The KA would be a much more reliable bet, but even a KA DW this old you either need to be handy or be willing to spend serious money when things go wrong.

In this case I would stick with the Kitchenaid. They are FAR better built and not as rust prone as D&M are.

We had a Kenmore dishwasher, just like #3 in the ad posted in the reply above, in our first weekend place.  I bought it from friends who were moving in 1996 and it did just fine for us.   We moved out of that house in 2007 and sadly, avocado green was not part of the colour scheme in the new house.  Another collector in Ontario has this machine now (well, I hope they still have it!)

 

Yes, a KitchenAid is better-built, but the Kenmore is easy to load.  I kinda miss my ol' Kenmore...

When my niece was born in 78, I convinced my sister to get a dishwasher ...it took a whole evening with the two of us ganging up on her husband till he gave in and said ok...this is the model we picked, with the push buttons that hid behind that sliding door....the auto advance timer failed when it was three years old, and we also learned it wasn't the best performance as far as cleaning , and worse with food deposit residue....when they built their next house in 83, she chose a TOL Whirlpool....

I know I'm in a small group, but I tend to really like those one arm KitchenAids. I think they do an amazing job cleaning and I don't find them difficult to load, and I find it takes effort to load it in a way that prevents to upper rack from coming clean. I really REALLY want to find one of the rare stainless tub ones! Until then I'll have to get my fix of pale blue on stainless by torturing myself with this Thermador...
