It is so cool to find a community of other appliance afficionados. I've always had a fascination with appliances, even when I was a pre-schooler. I grew up in the late 50's and early 60's which was a particularly interesting time for appliances. There was much diversity and creativity as manufacturers were all trying to win the appliance space race. I think we have actually been going through a similar period for the last 8 years or so, as we embark on the low water use and efficiency race. I showed the site to my partner who always told me my interest in appliances was a bit eccentric, but that it was just another hobby.

It is such a gas to talk with folks who love appliances and have so much knowledge. The people here are really nice. We recently had a convention that was more like a family reunion, without all the silly "baggage"

Dont we all just wish this site was around when we were children and got laughed at by our friends and family, or when we were teenagers and the fascination with home appliances was still there and just as strong?

Fortunately, I had a family that didn't laugh at my interests but was supportive. My sister loved drama, I thought I should try a clarinet but hated it (still give me the sheeves when I think of that reed vibrating in my mouth and occasionally buzzing up against my teeth--yech) and when we didn't want to do something any more, my parents didn't force us to continue. My dad was also great in that while he liked sports, he didn't pressure me to get into them, I don't care for team sports.

That said, I think that people who DON'T think automatic appliances are cool are the wierd ones. Geez, think about it...motors, switches, relays, lighted panels, what is not cool about that? To me, this provides a natural gateway to automotive, mechanical and other interests and hobbies. One inspiration begets others.

While I was busy as a teen with my hobbies, other teens indulged in drugs, getting girls pregnant, walked around bored. I was never, ever bored.

This is the reason I surround my kids with R/C planes, cars, rockets, bikes, swimming, and anything else I can think of. They will naturally select those which they love the most, and in the meantime, get exposure to the good stuff in life.

People can laugh all they want while we here have fun. Then they can go home to their boring little lives.

The internet really does bring people togehter and helps alleviate isolation..not to mention a bit edcational and entertaining.

Look, there are people who like ______ (fill in the blank) and are just like me... there are MORE of us! LOL

"Weird" is in the eye of the beholder. In the mainstream culture it's perfectly acceptable to spend hours each day absorbed in graphic media portrayals of violent felonies. Now *that* is not only weird, it's downright sick, in a bad way.

Here's another characteristic I've noticed about this crowd: People here tend to use G-rated cusswords instead of the usual R- and X-rated ones. What a refreshing change of pace that is! And if anyone tells you that saying "Oh poop!" (instead of the S-word) is "childish," tell them "childishness is better than adultery"! That'll give 'em pause to think!

Your folks sound a lot like mine were. They let all of us give many things a go, even though many of them we gave up on. I had to play drums in a marching band,,did that for awhile, had to learn piano,,they got an old piano, I took lessons for a couple of years but hated that part so just carried on my own. Wanted to be a star gymnast, took that for a few years early on thank G..cause that's all that saved me in highschool gym from being the last kid picked or worse. LOL It's hard to live in Canada and not be able to skate very well and especially play football, baseball or worse yet hockey. I hated hated hated hockey..I got to escape that most times and stay inside working on rings and parallel bars to ensure our school had a chance of winning. We also did a lot more travelling than most folks in the neighborhood from way up in Quebec to all over the southern US camping, visiting historical sites etc. The day I turned 16 naturally I got my license then wanted to by a used car with some money I'd saved up.. Dad said No Way, no car, end of discussion. Told me I could go off to England and visit relatives instead.. so I agreed but figured I'd get him back by saying I was going to go all over Europe as well hitchhiking.. didn't work, they both thought it was a great idea so I did and toured all over Europe and even to Morocco on about $300 and came back with money. None of my friends parents would ever dream of letting their kid do that on their own at 16. Also had loads of critters like snakes, lizards, cat,dog, birds, furry things of all sizes and shapes.. funny I still do.
