I miss my Maytag 806

I'm not able to use my Maytag 806 at the new house and I sure do miss it. The basement stairs are not in the best of shape and they are very narrow in width. There are water hook ups for the washer and a drain and no gas for the dryer. So for the current time the washer and dryer are sitting on the front porch.

If I can't get them in the basement by winter would it be okay to store them in the garage which is not heater and could it cause damage to the washer and dryer?

I would think if you make sure there is no water in the pump, or anyplace else in the washer, it should be fine. Let's hear from our experts on this subject.

Antifreeze.

Toss some antifreeze into the tub so it goes into the drain and it ought to be fine, just lay the drain hose down on the ground first to remove any remaining water.

Hookups are easily installed, even gas. If I move to Mt. Carroll, IL I might be able to assist with that. As for the steps, those will require measuring and looking.

Thanks Dave, I think the Maytag does a better job of cleaning than my modern Frigidaire front loader. I have put a time into that machine and I would hate to have to get rid of it, unless it went to a fellow collector that would take very good care of it. The dryer runs but for some reason I can't get the pilot light to light.

worst case would be to dis-assemble and then re-assemble in the basement....have done this a few times...depends how far you have to take it apart....or what about another room in the house, maybe in the kitchen, run water and drain from basement, or connect to sink....give us some specs and maybe we can help....

The kitchen is pretty full with two dishwashers, stove and refrigerator. I think they will go down the basement stairs, but Eric thinks they won't the hard part is the steps have a 90 degree turn before you go down the main steps. I would rather have the Maytags upstairs and the front loaders in the basement, but I think they are wider than the Maytags.

I wonder how much smaller they would be if the outer cabinet was removed.

If you have to leave a washer where it is going to freeze, the antifreeze in bottom of tub, as Dave suggested, will work.

Also, remember that the inlet valve and fill hose is likely filled with water. It might be easier to remove those, then taking chances that water may be left in the fine cracks and grooves found in the valve.

Good with getting them in the house. If it were me, I wouldn't want to leave them outside. I would find another room for them. Even if they aren't connected.

Accomodations

The Maytag should be in use. Sitting does the appliance no favors nor does humid summers and freezing winters. Find a handyman and have him widen the opening to the laundry room. If your opening just needs spitting room he can remove the door frame and then just put it back once the washer's inside. Take the smaller washer downstairs since they are more norrow. It could not possibly cost you more than a $100.00 bucks. If you're strapped for cash, sell a few nice to have but non essential pieces from your collection and preserve the Maytags. Put on the big hair and work the room for tips.

If the washer won't fit through the doorway, the dryer is most certainly screwed. Taking the cabinet off of the washer would probably be just enough to maneuver it around tight corners since the 'tree' and base can pivot independently. The dryer is a totally different story though.

I hope you find away to get the machines under a roof in the near future. Sitting outside and being exposed to the elements, not to mention moisture and wide temperature swings, won't do the electronics any good.
