I need a dome for an Oster Blender lid.

MANY years ago, back in the 90s, I was getting tired of the crappy, non-descript kitchen appliances on the market when I stumbled on what was being sold as a retro blender by Oster. It was a riff on the old "beehive" blenders and the glass mixing vase and metal motor housing were being pushed as old fashioned quality. However, it was also a one-speed machine with only a continuous/pulse selector switch.

 

That being said, the unit was deeply discounted since it was the last unit and it was missing the dome.

 

All these years later, I'm tired of holding my hand over the hole in the lid. Is this a standardized dome that Oster makes? Can I get it on eBay? Is there anything trick that I need to know so I don't buy a mis-match?

I got a whole lid including the measuring insert for pretty cheap on line a couple of years ago.   I don't think any models except those beehive revivals had round carafes and lids, but I'll bet the inserts are all the same.

 

While you're at it, consider investing in a genuine Oster "ice crusher" blade assembly.   It will make a world of difference for any blending job.  Even more impressive is the "fusion" blade, but one of those might cost more than the ice crusher.

 

And don't forget that any narrow mouth mason jar will fit on an Osterizer.

 

I love my retro Waring bar blender, but Osterizers remain the most versatile blenders ever made IMO, and they've never changed the direct drive mechanism for their blade assemblies so they're all interchangeable no matter what their age.

 

P.S.

On many cooking shows, professional chefs will place a kitchen towel over the carafe before putting the lid on, so there's a temporary -- albeit sloppy -- fix for you.

I've never seen a round Oster jar either..Can't say for sure if the cap from the standard square jar lids will fit that. Check out some thrift stores, they often have old Osters on the shelf.

Yes, any other type of Osterizer carafe will work.  I got one of these retro beehives in brushed stainless for free on Nextdoor, but all I wanted was the older square glass carafe it was paired with.   The base had a loose switch connection that I easily fixed.  I didn't need yet another blender, so I put a modern glass carafe on it -- sort of a wavy square shaped wider-at-the-top type I had laying around -- and gave it to my son in law for his bar.

 

As stated above, I've only seen these round carafes on the retro beehive models, and they take a round lid.  I don't think a round carafe is as effective as a square or, in Waring's case, a cloverleaf.   It's been a good 15 years since I got rid of a black retro beehive in short order because it was so bad at crushing ice due to shape of its carafe, plus it had an unacceptable noise level.  I gave it to my mom.  She had macular degeneration and the single switch was perfect for her.

 

Since discovering Oster's ice crusher and fusion blades, I'm an Osterizer fan again, and have a beautiful metallic blue/black/silver '60s Lady Kenmore re-badge and a slightly younger woodgrain/white/chrome Cyclo-Matic.

I got a Vitamix about 6 years ago that has been great. My wife wasn't happy that I combined the $500 blender as a birthday/mother's day gift (her birthday is less than a week from MD). But it has been good.
