My first generation Maytag Neptune will be heading for the cash for clunkers pile. I have had this machine for 9 years or more. It has been under extended warranty. During this time, the timer, timer control board, motor, motor control board, pump, fill valve, belt, main boot, and inside door panel have been replaced. The timer went out again and the bearing have burnt up. Maytag says that the repairs will be $1003. Since it exceeds the original cost of the washer ($999), they will "buy" me out and are sending a check for $772. The washer was quiet, cleaned the clothes well and they came out from the spin cycle very dry, and I did not have the mold odor that many front loaders are experiencing. Anyway, I have several options - try to buy a new Speed Queen top loader, buy a washer at an estate sale, or check out the various shops that refurbish and sell used washers/dryers. Most of these shops indicate that they handle Whirlpool/Kenmore and Maytags. What do you suggest? What model? I appreciate your suggestions. I really love machines from the '50s, '60s, and '70s, but I know that it will be very unlikely that they will have anything that old.

Get on the web (Cragls list say) and find youself ANY maytag washer that has a turquiose agitator.

:-)

You do realize that when you ask 10 people on this site that questions you will get 15 opinions, don't you?

Good deal

You did real good with you extended warrantee. As much as I love my Neptune, I'd take the money. If they let you keep the machine as well, part it out and sell on e-bay [time permitting]. If I lived closer, I'd take it off your hands.

If you can buy a SQ top loader you will be very satisfied. I paid $549 for mine, the TOL model in June. I love it.
It is the best machine I have ever owned. 3 years parts and labor warr. 5 years on the motor. 10 years on the trannie. Lifetime on the S/S tub. Where you gonna find a warranty like that on something else? Go to their website and find out where you can purchase one in your area. You won't be dissapointed.....TRUST ME
Good luck

Buy Speed Queen!

Buy a Speed Queen top loader! They have an outstanding warranty and are proudly made in the United States. Not many websites flash a made-with-pride-in-the-USA banner when you log on. Speed Queen's does! Please help keep Americans working!

Agree with Rob and the others on Speed Queen top loaders. We bought one last year and so far it's been wonderful.

Currently SQ offer four TL models, the only differences between them are in the numbers of cycles and motor speeds.

If you want a warm water rinse option, try and find SQ's models from last year and 2007. Their '07 top of the line (AWS75NW) had this option, but models that succeeded it (AWS76NW, all AWN models etc) have only cold water rinses. Or you can buy any current model and add a couple of Y-adapters, which will give you the same capability.

If I were looking for a new machine, I would also go for a Speed Queen. It's too bad that Whirlpool sold their Evansville refrigerator plant up the river to Mexico.

A slight dissent..

I would agree with a Speed Queen, but I like their front loaders. I've always liked front loaders because you can put more clothes in there.
