We bought some new towels several years ago (at Sears Canada) and found that they just wouldn't absorb; almost to the extent of pitching them. I washed them alone in very hot water (they were coffee brown) with lots of detergent and they FINALLY became tolerably absorbent.
I've had good results with Charisma brand bath towels/sheets from Costco. These get washed hot (130F) in the Neptune front loader and machine dried after every use.
You could probably do mail order; I think Charisma is also available from other retailers.
