Bottom line is, it holds soils in suspension when dissolved in water and is an anti-redeposition agent.
Makes detergents work fabulously. were present in the 70's. No truly comparable effective replacment has been found.
There is some concern over its properties as fertilzer and resulating algae blooms in rivers.

IT softnens the water and ties up minerals that can cause poor washing.Does not take much I use 2 oz by weight on a 125/lb load Makes bleach do a better job and is a must on heavy soil loads. It is one of the major players in getting mortican and M.E. and Morgue linen clean again. Also very good on nasty kitchen work.

STPP is Sodium Tripolyphosphate. It's used as a water softener in the wash water to boost detergent performance. It's great stuff!!!
