i think i have finally lost it

remember the westy that i finally got up and runnin after almost 5 years.. well finally got her a changer and was all done and happy.. was runnin just fine.. well i wanted to move it in from the garage into the house so got the machine on a dolly and come into the house and had only one step to go over.. well dumb me i didnt even think that such a little bit would damage anything....wrong... she fell off her side spring and tore the boot so it was time to replace the boot.. and you know what that means if you have to retrofit a boot.. the whole thing has to come apart.. yep and in the living room no less

well all done the new boot is just fine.. greg taught me how to retrofit a boot.. not easy and not fun but it works just fine..and no leaks yeah.. now you have to admit i have lost it to have done this in the house ha ha

Tragic, but worth the effort!

The bright side is that it hasn't been that long since you had the machine all apart so you didn't have to fight it to disassemble it.

That's what we tell ourselves when we've done something wrong, didn't do all the job or like this, a tragedy befalls our babies.

Good work, Chris - have you moved plumbing and drain lines into the living room yet? ;-)

Wow Chris - you have skills! Sometimes when something bad happens, a total rebuild makes things better - looks like the case. So with the retro-fit boot - something that is still available? Thanks for posting!

Hi Chris. I had the boot changed on my '51 Westy and after two years, it cracked. The machine is back at the shop with
Dr. Manny who said he wants to replace the boot again.
It will be in the shop for a long time as I know it was a big job when he replaced the boot the first time.
Also the timer was rebuilt again but it has to go back to Reeco as it was not working right.

What boot do you use for the retrofit?

ha ha well the carpet and the liv room did just fine..not one single stain or anything.. the boot you can still get its from or it fits a frigidaire front loader and you have to get the metal boot clamp as well. cant tell you wnat frigidaire model but they sell them online at repair clinic. i know them when i see them..i sure hope this one lasts a long time..and did the first load and no leaks. funny the load was quiet off balanced so it gave the machine a good shaking and nothing fell off so thats a good sign..

I'm glad you got her up and running no matter how big a hassle it was. You have wanted to use that toy for so long now. I would have loved to be the "fly on the wall" to hear your mother's comments! Do you plan on working on the Rollermatic in the living room as well?

When I began in the second hand appliance shop, I got a lot of the "nasty" jobs which had to be done just right but the teen-age trainees didn't want to do; no glory or muscle involved, just sweat and accuracy.
One of those was replacing the rubber boots in Front-Loaders and H-Axis Top Loaders.
You have my very great respect for learning how to do this...it is neither easy nor fun.
One thing I noticed was that some boots last for decades, others wear out in less than a year. Part of how well they last is how well they are installed; other aspects include whether they are allowed to dry thoroughly after washing (this one is a never ending story in our forum, no? Sort of like the toilet seat up or down battle).
One thing I can tell you - if just a little step ripped it, it was fixin' to go.
There are lots of interchangeable parts out there, maybe we should start a database on what we've tried out in who, er, which...

yea i know what the hell was i thinking??? i remember when i first got my unimatic it was in the kitchen on wheels and runnin till the bellows tore and flooded the trans and oil barfed all over the floor that was a mess..
