I want a Kitchen Aid A9 coffee grinder.

I am in need of a new coffee grinder by early August. For years I've wanted a Kitchen Aid A9 but cannot find one locally. I know they are available as vintage as well as recent-production, and I have no preference for one over the other. Might anyone have a spare in working order they'd like to sell?

But function is quite another.

 

You're aware that, at least the re-issued models, tend to spew grounds in all directions rather than into the glass catcher, aren't you?  I gave mine away because of that.

 

You also won't get a very fine grind out of these.  If you use a French press or a Toddy, you'll be pleased.  Not so much if you like espresso or have a coffee maker that uses cone filters.

Knowing Dave, the grounds will be for a perculator or vacuum pot.

P.S.

Early Norelco Dial-A-Brew machines also work best with regular grind coffee.  It even says so on the top of the dial controlling the water flow.

I have a late model replica (KCG200WH1) that I might consider parting with. I no longer attempt to use if for the reasons that Ralph mentioned, grounds fly out all over the counter and it vibrates enough that I have to hold the base to keep it from walking.

As for grind control mine is all over the place, set it for a course grind for the a French press and it makes enough talcum powder fines to make a good cup of mud. I've had it apart to set the burrs a few times too.

I have been tempted to tear mine down and see if I can't improve it. Spin balancing the motor might be a start. I just haven't taken the time on it. I don't think all the new ones were as bad as mine, I have heard some people are quite pleased with theirs. Generally the vintage ones with the flat sheet metal chute flapper seemed better overall.

If you want a coffee grinder that really does the trick, try to find one of the late model Kitchenaid Pro models. They are NLA but turn up on eBay often. These were generally excellent overall.

What is a "Toddy?" Is that some kind of coffee maker? I know what a "hot toddy" is, and as far as a "hot one," I haven't had one of those in years.

A Toddy....

Is a cold-water brewing system that makes a liquid coffee concentrate that you add to hot water to make drinkable coffee. You make up a batch of concentrate, and store it in the fridge until you want a cup.

Devotees say it makes an extremely smooth brew. The Toddy system uses filters that can be hard to find locally, so be aware of that. They can, of course, be ordered from the Internet pretty readily.
