even do they would still have a modern look i wish they could bring back classic washers direct drive beltdrive with electro mechanical timer not just white black silver grey stainless steal look colored like with speed queen but classic colors from older years like almond harvest gold avocado green ect @Chetlaham what would you do if you had in this style a direct drive whirlpool or kenmore or a dependable care maytag in the style like in the pic?

I would put them back into production with EM controls, warm rinse options, variable water level, dual action agitator, 3 speed motor and of course soak and pre-wash cycles.

A suds saver requires a double laundry sink. I doubt many would use it. Families avge. 2 kids these days.

It's too hard to build in obsolescence... Easy to hide in a microchip! One problem is that to make a mechanical timer work at all, it has to be fairly durable -like a jet engine. They can't make one fall apart in 100,000 miles that works in the first place. I guess there are plastics that they could use that would disintegrate after 5 years or so, but the majority of their buyers are conditioned to want electronics, and to accept a 3-5 year lifespan as "normal".

I don't think mainstream consumers really care one way or the other if the knob on the backplash connects to an encoder or a mechanical system. They just want a reliable machine that cleans well and looks modern. The problem with a mechanical timer is it's too easy to cheat the water fill which is a liability for the manufacturer. And there's no good way to do load sensing, temp sensing, motor PWM and other necessities required to be effective without electronics.

This is exactly what people need to actively reject. One or two people can be discredited with a quick hand, millions much less so.

Nostalgia is nice, but not always practical for daily living. Wether it's cost, energy, or time. Sean would prefer to drive a '78 Ford LTD, but would he drive it daily getting 10/14 m.p.g.?

I agree, but those people are the ones who root for modern machines and constantly bash vintage machines and the people who prefer them.

There are those on here, including many Americans, who if given a choice would take an old fashioned top loader.

I'm just happy that the history happened and I'm looking forward to the future. My LG is the best set my house has ever seen since 1991 and chances are that if I replace them later, the new set would be even better.

Here we go with someone who’s on a vintage appliance forum yet likes the new stuff, then starts to complain when things are junk..

I am convinced its some type of survival / coping mechanism. They know modern machines are worse in many many ways but fixate on the few positives (real or imagined) while hyping the down falls (real or imagine) of vintage machines.

I don't blame them entirely. Being stripped of consumer choice is physiologically distressing.

In reply to anything about appliances being relative to the current political climate, I don't think there is. Nor does anything to do with appliances contradict anyone's views. Appliances refer to convenience and economy of scale. The latter more to ethics, morals, values, etc. A few points intersect, but no more.
You can be a billionaire or dirt poor and be exiled underground. In the end, no one gets out alive. If you emerge, you won't have viable land, water or slave's to rebuild anything. Life is short. Is your mug half empty or half full? Those of us over age 60 get it better, I think. Not everyone though.

i am 52 years old i maybe old school but beltdrive or direct drive i would go for a set like this anytime if it means true hot water wash warm water wash warm rinse and that do not mix hot cold water to dumb down the tempature and not control by electroniques

The thing with a lot of those is they’ll have to be replaced given the gearing will get worn at least once in a machine’s lifetime!

I replaced my Kenmore’s knob and had someone put it in, that was obviously not on the actual assembly line raking pride in his work as much as a “oh no, here we go, another knob that’s not a doorknob but has to control another machine when everything is to throw away and replace with those touchpads and electronics that don’t have to be replaced, only the mechanics down below, until I’ll no longer have to worry about them because they’ll be irreplaceable and obsolete!”…

I’m worried about my new Maytags actually having a knob that turns for the cycle, despite everything else controlled via electronically operated relays that will just burn out and make a still-good but inoperative machine a throwaway!

If my Kenmore got lost or stolen, I'd get another one just like it. But I'd rather just get parts to fix up my Kenmore because this particular one holds a special place, had alot of memories of my grandmother and myself using it whenever I'd come down for a visit and that was one of the things I inherited when my grandparents passed.

I like my LG more because of it being a front loader design. Uses less electricity, water, and detergent. More delicate especially with less lint removal. I like the size of the capacity because I can fit things in there that for certain wouldn't work on my Kenmore. Outcleans my Kenmore especially when it comes to shoes. And I love how quiet it actually is, I can easily work from home while the washer is going because my office is in the laundry room.
