My mother has been wondering why the cheese has been freezing lately...

This fridge is only 8 months old, it already has a clogged/kinked condensate line for the defroster. Either that or the water filter is leaking. The location is the bottom right side of the fridge compartment, this model is a bottom freezer model. My father chiseled half of it out for the third and forth pictures.

Note, I didn't choose this blasted thing, credits to my father who couldn't wait two days for the local appliance store to ship in a counter-depth Whirlpool. This is a Frigidaire.

A friend of ours recently bought an LG

Which did the exact same thing. Damage during shipping. We put the door back on the actuator and the problem went away. You'd think, after 100 years or so of manufacturing and delivering these machines, the manufacturers would have given some thought to getting them to the customer in one piece.

Then again, 100 years after the death of millions caused by the flu, you'd think we'd have learned the value of inoculation....

Frigidaire/Electrolux AB quality declined after they switched to non cfc refrigerant, not that that is the reason being, just the time line. Our neighbors SxS stainless model lasted 12 years only. It had black handles. They had the damper door replaced once, and the next service call was for no cooling at all, and the tech condemned the unit (compressor). Not worth $500 plus to replace. They got a Samsung french door with the vari temp 4th. drawer. His nephew has had one for several years with no trouble.
Their early 2000's GE Artica in their basement was icing up on the back freezer wall. They bought it from their neigbors when they moved. It's in the gargae now, they also got a new GE for their new basement kitchen.
I'd go with Whirlpool myself next time. They have one for every budget between Kitchen Aid and Maytag as well.
I'm glad we had more room, because counter depth models are way more costly. Go figure, they have less room inside.

Good News Is Its Under Warranty

Get the FD people there.

 

Warring to anyone wanting a new refrigerator, avoid high end refs from, FD,  Electrolux, LG, Samsung and even GE, also avoid all bottom freezer models that have ice dispensers through the door, they are just too contemplated to work long without problems.

I took a better look at it today, it isn't a defroster condensate line, it is leaking from the water filter unit at the top right corner of the fridge and dripping down the back of the fridge. It also says how little insulation there is between the fridge and freezer, that the conduction from the freezer to the fridge bottom panel could support a ice chunk that large without melting. Super high quality...

If it were my decision, I would have found a vintage top freezer model, I have always liked the look of Norge Jet-Defrost.

and it's that new??? I'm paranoid now because I just got a similar fridge my old one died. The one I got is a side x side Whirlpool. I hope I don't run into anything like that for a while.

I looked up norge jet-defrost on YouTube and saw them. There was a canadian guy who posted a video of his parents one in their basement still running, but it's in terrible shape and the freezer is covered in ice.

I know those fridges were made better but are vintage fridges easy to find? Most people will need a fridge ASAP so they go buy one. It's not something you shop around for unless you just want to change from one that still works to another model. In my case I needed one THAT DAY.

From what I have read, Whirlpool is hands down better than the rest of the domestic competition without going to ridiculously priced built-in models(SubZero, Viking, Thermador, etc.). I don't know how the Korean brands hold up, but I can imagine parts support won't be that great.

I've had great service from my WP built Roper that was white and replaced with a WP built Maytag just like it but black.

My partner got a similar SxS Frigidaire almost 2 years ago.  About 8-10 months into 1st year it began not cooling in one side.  The control panel quit working properly.  He unplugged it for about30 minutes then it kind of "fixed" itself.  But then it stopped working properly again.  Under warranty, service guy said he just kept control boards for them in stock to replace.  A common problem.  Thus far no more problems.  (He wouldn't listen to me, I told him to get a WP product).  And he looked at them, but ended up with the FD because it was less expensive.  He wants us to get a French door with door dispensers when I have to get another new fridge but I've told him in no uncertain terms, no dispensers.  Too trouble prone.  I pointed out he'd lived without a working ice dispenser for the last two years of his previous Hotpoint because the mechanism that dispenses cubes through the door had bent for a 2nd or 3rd time.

I have a simple top freezer stainless steel Frigidaire with no ice maker, no dispensers, no bells or whistles. It was a bargain purchase at a closing Sears store last year and I have nothing but good things to say about it. It looks nice, it keeps everything ice cold, and it's damn near silent.
