true, but alas...

...when you sign those papers and put on that uniform, you are required and expected to do what you are told.

The ultimate betrayal is to be shot and killed by a fellow soldier.

I have some sympathy for this man who did it if he's that twisted -- but he has got to be put away forever so he can't do something like this again

And if it was a more nefarious plot -- then I really have no sympathy.

So Terrible, So Terrible

The lady that lives across the street has a grandson that is stationed at Ft. Hood. He was scheduled to deploy and he called her yesterday. He said "Grandma I had just left the building and was going back to my room when we heard the noise."

Thankfully he was safe, but so many others were not.

So Terrible, So Terrible

Glad I'm off the mainland.

I wonder from which planet these heartless killers came?? I hope they don't think they're going to get any military jail time. Their asses need to be shot, beheaded and cooked. Not necessarily in that order.

Programming

We are dealing people who are indoctrinated from birth, no matter how much western education they receive the fundamental programming is there...........when will the west wake up to this

I am so so sorry about this happening over there as i am for our own lads..........

Hunter thank you for starting this. I couldn't and wouldn't. This is in my back yard 1/2 an hour away, it's still my community. And has torn up the area. It is heartbreaking. I am very proud to be associated with those involved with putting the devastated survivors back together. We have a long way to go. Please pray for us.

I had the priviledge of telling a solider thank you yesterday as I saw leaving work yesterday. His reply, you are very welcome. I cried.

My family has the injured and fallen in our prayers. Being betrayed by one of your own is awful enough but for little or no reason is even worse. As awful as it sounds, I think justice would be served by giving what's left of him to the families and quietly closing the door behind you. I will be interested in trying to understand the whole picture AFTER all the dust and emotions have settled and all the facts emerge if ever...

What is needed isn't just a moment of reflection...

but some action. Bullying and psychological abuse are not taken seriously enough. What happened is extremely tragic, but could have been prevented. These sorts of incidents do happen far too often and we all know why. The perpetrators aren't actually bad people. They have family, faith, a job and, up to the point where they snap, live normal lives. Someone obviously pushed his buttons one time too many and this is the tragic result. It isn't as if, in this case, the shooter hadn't already been seeking assistance from his superiors and the defence department. Perhaps those who consistently taunted and harrassed this feller need to be held accountable for the part they had to play. Unless, of course, they got shot.

When people don a US army uniform they should be able to serve their country as American citizens without harrassment and humiliation from their peers.

I am withholding judgement

(like it's mine to make, anyway) until we know a lot more than we do right now.
Sadly, the last 48 hours have seen several suicides and murders at US military installations which almost certainly were triggered by this or at least have a connection.

Bullying is not a new phenomenon in any social group and when people lose it, their acting out is often very damaging indeed.

Given the state of the shooter's health, I doubt we'll ever really know what was going on, unless he left notes. We do know that the death toll should remain at 13, but three more people were identified today as having been shot and wounded.

This is a horrible mess, right now I think prayer and reflection is best.

'Bullying is not a new phenomenon'

That doesn't validate it as something legitimate and plenty can be done to lessen the incidents and severety of bullying. I also think that people need to be screened much more carefully before they are given the responsibility of carrying a lethal weapon.

Prayer and reflection are good, but analysis and honest action will be even better - if that is what people want.

rapunzel,

I'm not excusing it, I'm noting that it is and has been a problem for quite some time, especially in such circumstances.

I don't want to jump to conclusions - and since there is nothing material I can do, praying and reflecting are positive contributions.

A good read about bullying & a school shooting

19 Minutes by Jodi Picoult

Very interesting read, mostly told from the perspective of the person who was bullied and performed a school shooting.

Link is to Wikipedia with a summary of the book.

step it up...

re: those poor individuals the "shooter", counciled in the month's prior to his ultimate breakdown. It was this guys job to help Our service men and women with PTSD, i would think many of them did not receive proper treatment, they need to be located and proper therapy provided. Who is the superior officer to this guy? The taxpayers are outraged.. i don't think this can wait. alr2903
